I'm trying to use DPlngScan to rotate quite a lot of photos stored as jpg files, and getting an increasing number of crashes. Yesterday the crashes occurred after quite a number of rotations, but this morning (fresh boot) the occur after only a couple of rotations. When I try to save the rotated file the first crash occurs, reported by WimpLog as: 19 Sep 10:38:20 000 80000021: Error from (unknown): Not enough memory, stack overflow If I then reload DPlngScan loading a file gives: 19 Sep 10:42:38 000 00000000: Error from DPlngScan: DPlngScan has suffered an internal error type=5 and I have to re-boot the machine to get it working again. Sorry, forgot to do *where. Because the first error message refers to memory, I tried doubling the wimpslot in the !Run file, and now get, on loading a file: 19 Sep 10:50:05 000 00000000: Error from DPlngScan: Insufficient memory (case 4) In Choices, I have Max RAM set as 407668K, and for what it's worth, DPlngScan$Memory is -2 . As this is all beyond my knowledge, I'd be very grateful for any help in telling me what I should have done! In the meanwhile, I've reset the memory values in !Run, and won't do any more rotations till I have some advice. TIA, With best wishes, Peter. -- Peter \ / zfc Lu \ Prestbury, Cheltenham, Glos. OTOH keeping a value of -2, there is this line at the bottom of !Run IF = -2 then WimpSlot -min 2048K Change 2048 only to something bigger, e.g. 3000 I can imagine there may be a bug along the lines of each rotation uses up some memory permanently, eventually you run out and the resulting crash corrupts RISC OS. It's open to discussion what sort of memory is used up, I'm thinking of the internal workspace memory in DPScan, that can be increased but the action of doing so probably upsets the operation going on at the time. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling, P.O. Thanks for this. There are a variety of file sizes, but they're all big. Anything between 2 to 4 MB, the majority of them being around 3. I can't remember the sizes of the files where the crash happened, but I'll take note of them in future. The last one that failed for me this morning was W 3264, H 2448, bpp 24; they are all from my son-in-law's camera, which is a pretty high-spec one. >>19 Sep 10:38:20 000 80000021: Error from (unknown): Not enough memory, >>stack overflow > I wonder where that error is coming from. Well, it happened when I tried to save the rotated file. That seems to have done the trick. thanks, but only after I had shut down and restarted the whole machine. However, some oddities have arisen, though how meaningful they are I have no idea. Yesterday, after changing -2 to -1 I had another crash. *where didn't say anything useful (row of zeroes "is not in any module"), but CloseFiles showed that there was a file from DPlngScan in scrap still open. Unfortunately I didn't take notice of where this file was, and having closed it I couldn't find it. However, closing this file allowed me to run the app again, whereas previously after the crash it would crash again immediately I tried to use it. This morning, I have rotated and saved a whole lot of files with no problem. (The son-in-law takes a lot of photos in portrait format, which the otherwise invaluable !showJPEG doesn't automatically rotate, unlike IrfanView on Windows.) Today, the rotations seemed to take a >lot less time, and I slowly realised that yesterday, before I made the >change, the hourglass during the rotation was counting from 0% to 100% >twice, whereas today it was only once. I have no idea what this means, >but perhaps it might give a pointer to why the crashes happened? Of course your previous email reveals there is a bug, I've just pointed you to a way to avoid it. As I remarked a few weeks ago, the -2 memory setting is more prone to revealing bugs because memory moves around more often. It was interesting to hear that you were doing 90 degree rotations because they are a lot simpler than an arbitrary angle. Different code is used and it works using a different algorithm and its a lot faster. I would imagine there are many programs that do 90 degree rots. Rots of any angle involve antialiasing and several intermediate steps. What you describe may mean that today you're using the buttons for 90 degree rots and yesterday you were typing 90 degrees into the arbitrary angle field - I don't recall if that is smart enough to take out the 0, 90, 180 and 270 special cases. Your general experience underlines that an application can upset the insides of RISC OS, once that happens a machine reset is required. When I was programming I tended to reset the machine everytime there was a crash - remember that springy button on the back of the keyboard (?). -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling, P.O. Many thanks, David, for > putting me on the right path. Nothing to do with your original problem Peter but....... I'm sure you know that with Variations you can select and rotate a group of jpegs. I realise its not automatic but its reasonably fast with 2-3MB files on Iyonix and probably faster if you have a Beagleboard. I have Variations, but have never fully got to grips with it. I did try it with one of these files, but it complained that there was not enough memory, so I went back to struggling with DPlngScan, which I understand rather better. Looking at the Help file rather belatedly, I think Aemulor might be to blame. With best wishes, Peter. -- Peter \ / zfc Lu \ Prestbury, Cheltenham, Glos.
