I have just spent 3 hours signing up with 'free lists' and then searching the archives. I now admit to defeat in finding an answer. If the answer appears somewhere that I have missed I would be grateful for its source to be pointed out to me. I have OPro 2.77 on Iyonix with 256Mb of memory I have produced a document containing images and text totalling a size of 171,637,160 bytes As the images were added the editing became quite slow and it was taking over 15 seconds to save so I guessed a memory problem was emerging. However there was no indication that I had reached that stage. Today, after switching off overnight, the document refused to load, with the dreaded 'Not enough memory' message, although OPro itself did end up appearing on the taskbar. I have tried removing all other applications, as suggested in the manual, including !Printers and !Alarm, and set RAMdisc to zero. Also set monitor to 256 grey colours and resolution 640 x 512. All to no avail. I have noted that the !Run file for OPro has WimpSlot set at 1648 max, although the Task display window shows it as 2352K. (If I load OPro direct, i.e. not by trying to load the document then the Task display window shows 2348K) 1) Why was the document o.k. before saving it, if there really wasn't enough memory available? 2) Is the problem that memory is short? Or is it that OPro won't access the other 84Mb (or thereabouts) that seems to be left 3) Is there anything I can do - or try - to get the document to load on the Iyonix as it is? 4) If not, will purchase of additional memory solve the problem? 5) If not, is there any way to extract any of the contents of the file? You will guess I will be eternally grateful for any help .... There is an OPro dynamic area which grows when a document is loaded, and is roughly the same size as the document. (My dopcument had embedded pictures. This may well be different with referenced pictures.) I can't remember the dynamic area limit on Iyonix, but I think it's huge. There's no way you would load that document on RO4 or 6, with the 28M dynamic area limit. The only suggestion I can make, if it does eventually load, is to use the View-pictures option to turn off picture display. It may help - or not of course. If it uses referenced pictures, which given the size of the document seems unlikely, you could reduce the image size of the pictures outside OPro, and then you would need to change the scaling within OPro to display at the original size. If Dave uses Aemulor (1) it may be worth not running it, and see what happens. !) I know Dave uses Eureka which won't run on an Iyo without Aemulor, so perhaps that's where the problem could be. Available from around the above URL. >I have OPro 2.77 on Iyonix with 256Mb of memory >I have produced a document containing images and text totalling a size of >171,637,160 bytes There is always the thing about address space. What happens is that you have plenty of memory, but you run out of memory addresses. I always think that will not be easy for non-experts to understand. Every program on RISC OS can claim a dynamic area, and the dynamic areas are by default as big as the memory in the machine. Problem is that once you've run a few programs address space runs out - particularly if you have a lot of memory. So someone invented a way of limiting the maximum size of dynamic areas. What I guess may have happened is that you've got this limiting feature set up to limit the size of the OP dynamic area to less than 256MB. I've forgotten what this is called or where it is set up (been discussed here many times). You can also actually run out of address space, just run a few programs before OP is run. Even if they're not using much memory they can claim a lot of address space. The stuff in the manual about quitting programs etc. is old fashioned, but even so before you run OP and expect to load a 170MB of memory you'd better have that much memory free in the task manager. >1) Why was the document o.k. before saving it, if there really wasn't enough >memory available? Good question, documents tend to be compacted before being saved. But the external conditions may have changed. >2) Is the problem that memory is short? Or is it that OPro won't access the >other 84Mb (or thereabouts) that seems to be left See above. >3) Is there anything I can do - or try - to get the document to load on the >Iyonix as it is? See above. >4) If not, will purchase of additional memory solve the problem? If the address space is the problem no. The solution is to start using referenced images. Even if you had more memory the ARM processor is not really up to shifting it all about. >5) If not, is there any way to extract any of the contents of the file? As above. A bit of an experiment, keep dropping large pictures into an OP document, look at the OP dynamic area in the task manager and see how big you can get it. In the earlier days with Impression, which was and still is, notorious for suddenly erroring and falling over, taking your latest additions to the magnum Opus with it... I quickly cottoned on to the simple rule, keep your large doc in bits... Easier to manage on screen, less chance of the Doc processor going TU and taking your latest additions with it, etc. It's also easier to move through and edit. Ovation Pro has been very good in that respect, but it does permit, as you've mentioned, very large documents to be created. Of course we now need to consider the treacle aspect... I'm only using a SARPC here, and the 70+ Mbyte document (Max size I can create) I've work up is really quite unmanageable, in both scrolling the document which contains a number of sizeable graphics, and attempting to edit, is to say the least, exceedingly hard work. I appreciate an Iyonix would handle this faster, but still quite slow when compared to OvPro Windows. Moving that same document to my rather average specced Laptop (Core2 Duo 1.66 + 1.66 Ghz Integrated graphics... The document will scroll and display as fast as I can pull the scroll bar, and will edit as though the document was still of a small size. I also have the memory that such documents automatically had large pictures swopped out of memory if needed - like referenced pictures in Ovation Pro. I'm surprised that scrolling is slow for a large document, I'd imagine it was anything that moved memory around that caused trouble. For a long time a RISC OS computer had 4MB of memory, the memory management strategies suitable for that amount of memory aren't good for many times more. Alas that's what you're stuck with - comment applies to all the dynamic area/address space stuff. Finally there's the proxy image feature in Ovation Pro, helps make referenced images faster. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling, P.O. First the good news. After a night's rest for the Iyonix (shut down but not switched off at the back with the rocker switch) I tried again. For some reason I loaded OPro onto the taskbar before double-clicking on the offending file - I normally go straight to the file. It loaded! Closing the file, without saving it again, then quitting OPro and then double-clicking on the file, it loaded again. I can see no logical reason why this should be. However, thinking the unreasonable, later in the first day when I had given up on the file loading, I had trouble with my router. No connection for POPstar. Message 'Host not available' (or some such wording). The light on the router indicating that the computer was connected to it was off. Other computers on the network were fine. I tried swapping cables and sockets but results were still the same. The following day, the day the file loaded as described above, the router light was on and POPstar finctioned as it should. Again I see no logical reason why there should be a connection between the two but ... Back to the large file. I have never produced one as large as this before but it has to be a single document for the professional printer company to produce the book. I had vaguely heard of referenced pictures but not used them before. Hence the large file-size. Now I have the file back in use I am replacing all the images by the referenced versions. Thanks for the information about the addressing issue. I now have abetter idea of what's going on. Alan made 2 suggestions. Turning off images does make a dramatic difference to the scrolling speed. Very useful. I am hesitant to reduce the pisture size, though as the Printer company have specified resolution etc, for best results. I am confident, though, that the Referencing will solve the problem. Yes I do have Aemulor - what a brilliant memory Peter has! - but it wasn't loaded at the time and hadn't been loaded previously in my working session. So I don't believe that was a relevant factor in this case. Worth bearing in mind for the future, though. David suggested an experiment which I will carry out and let you all know about as soon as it is done but it will be after the weekend. Off out in a bit for rest of day. John and Chris both referred to the Dynamic Areas limit. I do have the 128s in that relevant file but when I load the large file the OPro Dynamic Area shows 167828K in the Task Display which is more than 128MB, is it not? -- David ----- david.rooke@orpheusinternet.co.uk Notts, UK To unsubscribe or subscribe goto: http://www.freelists.org/list/davidpilling From davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Sun Oct 17 12:49:00 2010 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1P7Rbg-1fjGPo-06-AbT.pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 12:49:00 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1P7Rbg-1fjGPo-06-AbT; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 11:40:52 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.106] (lhlo=anchor-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt3.mail.demon.net with lmtp id 1P7Rbg-1fjGPo-06 for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 11:40:52 +0000 Received: from [206.53.239.180] (helo=turing.freelists.org) by anchor-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1P7Rbd-0003Nm-GO for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 11:40:52 +0000 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 0183AD4347E; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:40:47 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id zQ1EJmYE7ipk; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:40:47 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing.freelists.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id B8CF0D42A51; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:40:33 -0400 (EDT) Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list davidpilling); Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:40:33 -0400 (EDT) X-Original-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Delivered-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 90A20D42A5B for ; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:40:33 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id VPNoKMYXZt9v for ; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:40:33 -0400 (EDT) Received: from slave.orpheusnet.co.uk (slave.genesysnet.co.uk [86.54.100.213]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 2EBF5D42A51 for ; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:40:33 -0400 (EDT) Received: from dave.nom ([91.84.89.99]) by slave.orpheusnet.co.uk (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id o9HBeRVH019067 for ; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 12:40:28 +0100 MIME-Version: 1.0 From: Dave Symes To: Date: Sun, 17 Oct 2010 12:02:22 +0100 Subject: [softwarelist] Re: OvationPro 2.77(Iyonix) - large document memory problem Message-ID: <516795b08edave@triffid.co.uk> In-Reply-To: <4abc7f6751.Bernard@bapfish.plus.com> References: <5166c7ea01david.rooke@orpheusinternet.co.uk> <5166f062fadave@triffid.co.uk> <51677f1825dave@triffid.co.uk> <4abc7f6751.Bernard@bapfish.plus.com> User-Agent: Pluto/3.04e (RISC-OS/6.20) Content-Type: text/plain X-archive-position: 247 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Errors-to: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org X-original-sender: dave@triffid.co.uk Precedence: normal Reply-To: davidpilling@freelists.org List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: davidpilling X-List-ID: davidpilling List-subscribe: List-owner: List-post: List-archive: X-list: davidpilling X-CNFS-Analysis: v=1.0 c=1 a=GN8WhIg6w8UA:10 a=cwSeiBLpj2MA:10 a=wPDyFdB5xvgA:10 a=EBOSESyhAAAA:8 a=X6ERjUvwAAAA:8 a=Rjyi1bWPAAAA:8 a=D_VmOLqjAAAA:8 a=E0tENS2k94ZyzHds7qMA:9 a=RSIbqnb7xM4rUuXxPDQA:7 a=1IlYrdGmgSgQMYbV1e0J8AX9cosA:4 a=PuKaCD_GyroA:10 a=XZ_ZHgT1PeaYugq6:21 a=V4V2SCeyHLDmDrGl:21 In article <4abc7f6751.Bernard@bapfish.plus.com>, Bernard Veasey wrote: > In message <51677f1825dave@triffid.co.uk> > Dave Symes wrote: > > Of course we now need to consider the treacle aspect... ISTR I > did a setting for SparkFS that let a value be set for the size of > its dynamic area. Yes - well behaved programs set their own maximum size when creating a new dynamic area. However, many programs take the easy way out by specifying -1 for the max size, which equates to the total RAM in the machine. This is why the consequences have become much more severe with the later machines, particularly with e.g. a 1GB Iyonix. While the program may actually be creating a small dynamic area, the OS 'sets aside' in the logical address space a size equal to the total RAM. Not surprising the available total address space (very distinct from actual memory) becomes exhausted when a number of programs which do this are run simultaneously. -- Chris Johnson To unsubscribe or subscribe goto: http://www.freelists.org/list/davidpilling From davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Sun Oct 17 13:04:01 2010 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1P7RtB-3ij000-05-AJy.pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 13:04:01 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1P7RtB-3ij000-05-AJy; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 11:58:57 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.98] (lhlo=anchor-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt3.mail.demon.net with lmtp id 1P7RtB-3ij000-05 for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 11:58:57 +0000 Received: from [206.53.239.180] (helo=turing.freelists.org) by anchor-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1P7RtA-0000LB-4F for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 11:58:57 +0000 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 09A5AD43565; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:58:52 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 8Z5FkT9LJeZO; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:58:51 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing.freelists.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 3A0A0D4249F; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:58:38 -0400 (EDT) Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list davidpilling); Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:58:38 -0400 (EDT) X-Original-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Delivered-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 0F9D8D4347E for ; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:58:38 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id FcMPx4yoYtwa for ; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:58:37 -0400 (EDT) Received: from relay.pcl-ipout02.plus.net (relay.pcl-ipout02.plus.net [212.159.7.100]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id B54CAD4249F for ; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 07:58:37 -0400 (EDT) X-IronPort-Anti-Spam-Filtered: true X-IronPort-Anti-Spam-Result: AvsEAKaBukzUnw4R/2dsb2JhbAChK3HBKYVJBA Received: from outmx02.plus.net ([212.159.14.17]) by relay.pcl-ipout02.plus.net with ESMTP; 17 Oct 2010 12:58:37 +0100 Received: from chrisjohnson.plus.com ([80.229.143.2] helo=radstock.localdomain) by outmx02.plus.net with esmtp (Exim) id 1P7Rsq-0003Uw-Ej for davidpilling@freelists.org; Sun, 17 Oct 2010 12:58:36 +0100 MIME-Version: 1.0 From: Chris Johnson To: Date: Sun, 17 Oct 2010 12:58:07 +0100 Subject: [softwarelist] Re: OvationPro 2.77(Iyonix) - large document memory problem Message-ID: <51679acb33chris@chrisjohnson.plus.com> In-Reply-To: <5167990a27david.rooke@orpheusinternet.co.uk> References: <5166c7ea01david.rooke@orpheusinternet.co.uk> <5166f062fadave@triffid.co.uk> <51677f1825dave@triffid.co.uk> <4abc7f6751.Bernard@bapfish.plus.com> <5167990a27david.rooke@orpheusinternet.co.uk> User-Agent: Pluto/3.04c (RISC-OS/5.16) Content-Type: text/plain X-archive-position: 249 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Errors-to: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org X-original-sender: chris@chrisjohnson.plus.com Precedence: normal Reply-To: davidpilling@freelists.org List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: davidpilling X-List-ID: davidpilling List-subscribe: List-owner: List-post: List-archive: X-list: davidpilling X-CNFS-Analysis: v=1.0 c=1 a=GN8WhIg6w8UA:10 a=cwSeiBLpj2MA:10 a=wPDyFdB5xvgA:10 a=u5KZqSEpAAAA:8 a=D_VmOLqjAAAA:8 a=X9A-8fc4HpcG4FDTKogA:9 a=pCVRbYAciLCJbr-THNkA:7 a=wGBDL8y7aw1fzHPWC-EIiDeJ9L8A:4 a=CrdbFP1tMs0A:10 a=q6EYkVsgJoJADVCY:21 a=vJCCshlTu2uzntbR:21 In article <5167990a27david.rooke@orpheusinternet.co.uk>, David Rooke wrote: > John and Chris both referred to the Dynamic Areas limit. Let us know. On my 256MB Iyonix with only !Alarm and !Orinters loaded and no RAM disk I loaded 8,7MB sprites into approximately half-A4 page frames until I got the 'Not enough memory' message. At that point the OP dynamic area showed 127952K and the Free memory (in 'Applications Tasks) showed 99560K. That seems to me, based on information shared in other emails, to indicate that it is indeed the addressing memory that runs out rather than the computer memory itself. I did the experiment twice; the first time I forgot to zero the RAM disk. However it made no difference. I have my RAM Disk set at 10MB so I would have expected an extra image to be loaded before memory ran out. This was not the case thus providing further evidence that addressing is the cause. -- David ----- david.rooke@orpheusinternet.co.uk Notts, UK To unsubscribe or subscribe goto: http://www.freelists.org/list/davidpilling From davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Mon Oct 18 15:58:49 2010 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1P7qwT-0JEknw-01-AqE.pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Mon, 18 Oct 2010 15:58:49 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1P7qwT-0JEknw-01-AqE; Mon, 18 Oct 2010 14:44:01 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.71] (lhlo=anchor-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt3.mail.demon.net with lmtp id 1P7qwT-0JEknw-01 for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Mon, 18 Oct 2010 14:44:01 +0000 Received: from [206.53.239.180] (helo=turing.freelists.org) by anchor-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1P7qwO-0001Om-TW for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Mon, 18 Oct 2010 14:44:01 +0000 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id D5575D42862; Mon, 18 Oct 2010 10:43:54 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id DWHbz4bX2QFs; Mon, 18 Oct 2010 10:43:54 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing.freelists.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 092ACD42768; Mon, 18 Oct 2010 10:43:40 -0400 (EDT) Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list davidpilling); Mon, 18 Oct 2010 10:43:40 -0400 (EDT) X-Original-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Delivered-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id DA0F3D4276B for ; Mon, 18 Oct 2010 10:43:40 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id i2CbWHXgg3iU for ; Mon, 18 Oct 2010 10:43:40 -0400 (EDT) Received: from lon1-post-2.mail.demon.net (lon1-post-2.mail.demon.net [195.173.77.149]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id A18F4D42768 for ; Mon, 18 Oct 2010 10:43:39 -0400 (EDT) Received: from pilling.demon.co.uk ([62.49.20.172]) by lon1-post-2.mail.demon.net with esmtp (Exim 4.69) id 1P7qw7-0006fk-al for davidpilling@freelists.org; Mon, 18 Oct 2010 14:43:39 +0000 Message-ID: Date: Mon, 18 Oct 2010 15:42:12 +0100 To: davidpilling@freelists.org From: David Pilling Subject: [softwarelist] Re: OvationPro 2.77(Iyonix) - large document memory problem References: <5166c7ea01david.rooke@orpheusinternet.co.uk> <51682a489edavid.rooke@orpheusinternet.co.uk> In-Reply-To: <51682a489edavid.rooke@orpheusinternet.co.uk> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain;charset=us-ascii;format=flowed User-Agent: Turnpike/6.07-S () X-archive-position: 251 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Errors-to: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org X-original-sender: flist@pilling.demon.co.uk Precedence: normal Reply-To: davidpilling@freelists.org List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: davidpilling X-List-ID: davidpilling List-subscribe: List-owner: List-post: List-archive: X-list: davidpilling X-CNFS-Analysis: v=1.0 c=1 a=GN8WhIg6w8UA:10 a=cwSeiBLpj2MA:10 a=wPDyFdB5xvgA:10 a=kj9zAlcOel0A:10 a=u5KZqSEpAAAA:8 a=RCS9_8sYAAAA:8 a=P-NweQeuAAAA:8 a=dqhQn4rJAAAA:8 a=D_VmOLqjAAAA:8 a=AUVGNIVZ4bYDa-lp11QA:9 a=jjh86Xm9Q1pqfo2lqYwA:7 a=eGbXts-DpERO9HKD-zlUbdYMCL4A:4 a=CjuIK1q_8ugA:10 a=CrdbFP1tMs0A:10 a=th9PamVobSjx8cD_:21 a=SU3nbeIpQYYA1Ty4:21 Hi, In message <51682a489edavid.rooke@orpheusinternet.co.uk>, David Rooke writes >loaded 8,7MB sprites into approximately half-A4 page frames until I got the >'Not enough memory' message. At that point the OP dynamic area showed 127952K That sounds like the 128MB default dynamic area max size kicking in. Others above have explained where this is set. The mystery is why sometimes you can create documents bigger than that. I did wonder if RISC OS allows the last (the top) dynamic area to expand if needed. On that theory if OP is the last app you load you may be able to have bigger documents. I've had a look at the source code (no, OP does not let you set the max DA size), and I've Googled (no, there does not seem to be a utility that lets you set the max DA size by application). So why doesn't someone write the utility - all you gotta do is intercept the SWI vector (code available) and look what the current app. is (code available), and tweek the numbers going into the create dynamic area SWI. ISTR that my utility SpecialFX http://www.hallas.demon.co.uk/Software/SFX/ tackles both the (code available) challenges. Anyway I can make the code available. Actually going off the name of the dynamic area might be a better approach, because some tasks will create the DA before registering as a task - that would simplify things to "intercept the SWI vector". -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling, P.O. However it made no difference. I have my RAM Disk set at 10MB > so I would have expected an extra image to be loaded before memory > ran out. This was not the case thus providing further evidence that > addressing is the cause. I did the same with a 512 MB Iyonix, and lots of apps running. My DAlimit is set to 128M. I could load sprites of diminishing size until the OvationPro DA had grown to 131070K in the task manager display. I guess I could have gone on with even smaller sprites to the limit of 131072 (which is 128*1024, digital K being 1024). Thus the OvationPro DA is being limited by the DALimit value. There was still 322 MB free memory. Answers include converting images to jpeg, scaling the images down, using reference and proxied images, etc. -- Chris Johnson To unsubscribe or subscribe goto: http://www.freelists.org/list/davidpilling From davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Sat Oct 23 18:25:12 2010 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1P94cB-3ipVbs-05-BtA.pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Sat, 23 Oct 2010 18:25:12 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1P94cB-3ipVbs-05-BtA; Thu, 21 Oct 2010 23:32:07 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.95] (lhlo=anchor-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt3.mail.demon.net with lmtp id 1P94cB-3ipVbs-05 for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Thu, 21 Oct 2010 23:32:07 +0000 Received: from [206.53.239.180] (helo=turing.freelists.org) by anchor-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1P94c9-0005yt-Lt for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Thu, 21 Oct 2010 23:32:07 +0000 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 16C48D44CBB; Thu, 21 Oct 2010 19:32:03 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 8DzmAD2r3O7k; Thu, 21 Oct 2010 19:32:02 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing.freelists.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 5C21BD44C0C; Thu, 21 Oct 2010 19:31:49 -0400 (EDT) Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list davidpilling); Thu, 21 Oct 2010 19:31:49 -0400 (EDT) X-Original-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Delivered-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 0A49CD44C0F for ; Thu, 21 Oct 2010 19:31:49 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id nkTy-HtBHuaO for ; Thu, 21 Oct 2010 19:31:48 -0400 (EDT) Received: from auth.a.painless.aaisp.net.uk (auth.a.painless.aaisp.net.uk [90.155.4.51]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id C759DD44C0C for ; Thu, 21 Oct 2010 19:31:48 -0400 (EDT) Received: from cpc3-sgyl17-0-0-cust953.sgyl.cable.virginmedia.com ([92.235.167.186] helo=[192.168.1.14]) by a.painless.aaisp.net.uk with esmtpsa (SSLv3:AES256-SHA:256) (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1P94bq-0005bE-RZ for davidpilling@freelists.org; Fri, 22 Oct 2010 00:31:46 +0100 Date: Fri, 22 Oct 2010 00:29:07 +0100 From: Jeremy Nicoll - zf freelists To: davidpilling@freelists.org Subject: [softwarelist] Re: OvationPro 2.77(Iyonix) - large document memory problem Message-ID: In-Reply-To: <51677f1825dave@triffid.co.uk> References: <5166c7ea01david.rooke@orpheusinternet.co.uk> <5166f062fadave@triffid.co.uk> <51677f1825dave@triffid.co.uk> Mail-Followup-To: davidpilling@freelists.org User-Agent: Messenger-Pro/2.66.0.3327 (Qt/4.6.3) (Windows-XP) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-archive-position: 253 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Errors-to: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org X-original-sender: jn.fr.lsts.74@wingsandbeaks.org.uk Precedence: normal Reply-To: davidpilling@freelists.org List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: davidpilling X-List-ID: davidpilling List-subscribe: List-owner: List-post: List-archive: X-list: davidpilling X-CNFS-Analysis: v=1.0 c=1 a=GN8WhIg6w8UA:10 a=cwSeiBLpj2MA:10 a=wPDyFdB5xvgA:10 a=kj9zAlcOel0A:10 a=Rjyi1bWPAAAA:8 a=D_VmOLqjAAAA:8 a=Tm0skM_xE0ECi6xlozgA:9 a=d6jwg1yGZQKIBIqK5BwA:7 a=Y0KmFAKmNmXPMTR7iu88a7mSZj4A:4 a=CjuIK1q_8ugA:10 a=PuKaCD_GyroA:10 Dave Symes wrote: > ... For a long time I've also been in the habit of keeping a DDL copy of each document as well as the normal OvnPro file. It'd be nice if there was a way to persuade OP to save both filetypes automatically, rather than one needing to do it manually. I dare say it could be done with a script. -- Jeremy C B Nicoll - my opinions are my own To unsubscribe or subscribe goto: http://www.freelists.org/list/davidpilling From davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Tue Oct 26 22:05:27 2010 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1PAqZP-1l3GPo-05-Cke.pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Tue, 26 Oct 2010 22:05:27 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1PAqZP-1l3GPo-05-Cke; Tue, 26 Oct 2010 20:56:35 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.210] (lhlo=lon1-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt3.mail.demon.net with lmtp id 1PAqZP-1l3GPo-05 for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Tue, 26 Oct 2010 20:56:35 +0000 Received: from [206.53.239.180] (helo=turing.freelists.org) by lon1-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1PAqZN-00039k-T3 for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Tue, 26 Oct 2010 20:56:35 +0000 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 1138ED46443; Tue, 26 Oct 2010 16:56:33 -0400 (EDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=simple/simple; d=freelists.org; s=turing; t=1288126593; bh=vkbed7UwPtN3+DJU/wAToIVI53V5+nkTVs4IERyX W2w=; h=Message-ID:Date:To:From:Subject:MIME-Version:Content-Type: Sender:Reply-To:List-help:List-unsubscribe:List-Id:List-subscribe: List-owner:List-post:List-archive; b=w/oT5na0ACvnxbt37ASNA22e6bAdT 91tkCP9tLZQum3TLTpEn8Mp0KB9m4MqKRo3QrMR5r0Tknfxk5ErnuzHFuufpyJcQhec 8C05/axky5qfS6eD8F03wcJehtcrVE4xU3CjMy9leP4rOqs17xjfiyopD2HC9xQyeEX prwt2vFI= X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id oIogv2QXc+ok; Tue, 26 Oct 2010 16:56:32 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing.freelists.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 789F3D46436; Tue, 26 Oct 2010 16:56:19 -0400 (EDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=simple/simple; d=freelists.org; s=turing; t=1288126592; bh=vkbed7UwPtN3+DJU/wAToIVI53V5+nkTVs4IERyX W2w=; h=Message-ID:Date:To:From:Subject:MIME-Version:Content-Type: Sender:Reply-To:List-help:List-unsubscribe:List-Id:List-subscribe: List-owner:List-post:List-archive; b=NJTq2ZZTE3XYk7lOKSC75Y2r8iU2Z gpbV4IGEiH4OTWzJmZLNPvhnWyX0EPH0CDcJajjk+5HZiuvslzBPJWi7pEkaLllNZwc oQV+ORU1PbEusquQ8XSxHrGfKiTt6hq9ALDWMNTeWQSrs60GAh7ZAOn11+t4pvXm9dC IxbEfs6c= Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list davidpilling); Tue, 26 Oct 2010 16:56:19 -0400 (EDT) X-Original-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Delivered-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 4B9C9D46440 for ; Tue, 26 Oct 2010 16:56:19 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id LBks-crcNflL for ; Tue, 26 Oct 2010 16:56:19 -0400 (EDT) Received: from lon1-post-3.mail.demon.net (lon1-post-3.mail.demon.net [195.173.77.150]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id C2FA2D46436 for ; Tue, 26 Oct 2010 16:56:18 -0400 (EDT) Received: from pilling.demon.co.uk ([62.49.20.172]) by lon1-post-3.mail.demon.net with esmtp (Exim 4.69) id 1PAqYa-0005kR-ea for davidpilling@freelists.org; Tue, 26 Oct 2010 20:56:17 +0000 Message-ID: Date: Tue, 26 Oct 2010 21:54:33 +0100 To: David Pilling From: David Pilling Subject: [softwarelist] Dutch hyphenation data available MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain;charset=us-ascii;format=flowed User-Agent: Turnpike/6.07-S () X-archive-position: 254 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Errors-to: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org X-original-sender: flist@pilling.demon.co.uk Precedence: normal Reply-To: davidpilling@freelists.org List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: davidpilling X-List-ID: davidpilling List-subscribe: List-owner: List-post: List-archive: X-list: davidpilling X-CNFS-Analysis: v=1.0 c=1 a=YeeheKBLMAsA:10 a=cwSeiBLpj2MA:10 a=wPDyFdB5xvgA:10 a=kj9zAlcOel0A:10 a=GSsPdyyNAAAA:8 a=P-NweQeuAAAA:8 a=dqhQn4rJAAAA:8 a=D_VmOLqjAAAA:8 a=gdZ1QKeulHOV_esMzsAA:9 a=FYgtF9xa6pHrcz5cQ5AA:7 a=ve8THhQJrRqEdrj_zVDD2LfyuxUA:4 a=CjuIK1q_8ugA:10 a=oO5hOFs5WTCOhjeR:21 a=-7YKjnq1ajtWQ1xs:21 Hi, I've just uploaded a huge list of hyphenated Dutch words produced by Paul Sprangers to my web site, see: http://davidpilling.info/cd/Others/Sprangers/Dutch.zip You can merge this with the default hyphenation dictionary in Ovation Pro for RISC OS or Windows. **But** before you do, note that you'll need a new version of Ovation Pro for Windows, because this word list revealed a bug in older versions. The installer for the latest version of Ovation Pro (2.92 14th. October 2010) is at: http://www.davidpilling.info/cd/DavidPilling/OvationPro/InstallOvnPro.exe Thanks to Paul for permission to make this list available. This concludes a project that began before a virus infected my PC. I've now done a new install on a new disc - it takes a long time to get things back to how they were, just where does one get the MicroSnot [1] manifest tool, essential to build a program, from etc. A result this version of Ovation Pro for Windows is slightly experimental, perhaps a different version of the compiler etc. have been used to construct it. [1] shows a poor attitude, but in the circumstances... -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling, P.O.
