She has now found out how it happens; I have been maligning her! If we load a graphic into David Pilling's Scanning Software, and then save it as a JPEG by dragging into an Ovation Pro frame (or Artworks, or Easiwriter), the drag works fine, but a copy of the JPEG is also made in the root directory of the hard disk; at the same time, the file name in the DPSS window is changed to . This does not happen if the file is transferred as a Sprite, nor of course if the modified JPEG is saved to hard disk and loaded to Ovation Pro from there. I would have gone on accusing my beloved of carelessness had she not transferred a JPEG which happened to be called "Route" (no suffix). If you dare, just try putting a file called "Route" into your root directory, and see what happens when you re-boot - but be warned; it took me two days to find what had gone wrong and wipe the offending file. Congratulations to anyone who knows the operating system well enough to predict the effect. DPSS 1.24 (I've also checked v1.18). Iyonix on RISC OS 5.11. I wonder what the value of wimp$scrap is? (F12, and show wimp$scrap). It should point to !Scrap inside !Boot. Some file types require random access to the file being saved - by which I mean one writes the data, and then has to go back to the start of the file to write some more information. On RISC OS files can be transferred by RAM transfer or via the wimp scrap file - if you want to do random access as you write, then the scrap file is the easier route. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. It also seems to skip everything in Choices:Boot.Predesk after !+Resource, so inter alia the screen gets left in a default 640x480. All very alarming! Over the years people have reported crashes, however they have not been reproducible - I assume that if the layout of directories and files is just right then they trigger a bug in SyncDiscs. Working on that theory, you may find that any change makes the problem go away, for example adding a file, or removing one, perhaps changing the size of the wimp slot in the !Run file. Of course there may be other possible causes, for example the file system might be crashing. I would be inclined to enable the log file in SyncDiscs and see if you can discover when it crashes - although that may not be much help because when the program crashes not all the data written to the log file will have been written to disc. Now if I could get around to making my RISC OS desktop library available, I could also open source SyncDiscs and someone could sort it out... -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. [Snip] Steve's reply caused me to have a dig about in the directories being backed up for anything unusually large. I used !Coeden which gives a tree structure and a graphical indication of file size so anything odd shows up clearly. No excessively large files but some massive recursion inside !Scrap. I must have had a senior moment in the middle of last week and decided that the 3rd SD window referring to 'Scrap' meant !Scrap.etc when it just means a place where files can be held until they are ditched: not quite the same thing. Anyway, I had dragged my Boot:Resources.!Scrap.ScrapDirs.IDdisabled into that window and that had started the rot because one of the directories I back up is !Boot. I really don't need to save the old files anyway so that window should have been left blank. This /is/ reproducible if you set that scrap location and then backup !Boot (but don't blame me if it mucks up your !Scrap). I have now found a posting to this list by David on this very topic which warns of problems: Message-ID: Date: Fri, 9 Feb 2007 Silly me! I'm sorry to have wasted your time but it may be a useful warning to other users. Some versions have the ability to ignore certain zones (or paths). I suppose it would be easy enough to add your scrap path to the zones. Obviously ideally the program should protect you from such things, and I've just outlined a simple way that it could be modified to do that. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. I have a document, for which the Master for the front page is shown at http://www.vanderhoff.org/tony/masterpage.jpeg. The lower frame (headed "sysyem design") is a grouping of the 4 constituent frames. All 4 have text runaround set to off. If I save this document in native format, all is well. However, if I save it as DDL, and reload it, I get the effect shown at http://www.vanderhoff.org/tony/frontpage.jpeg, which obviously is unacceptable. The Master page for this offending document is still represented correctly, and fiddling with the master, and subsequently closing it fixes the main document, but if I save this as DDL and reload, the error is once again visible. So, it this a bug, or am I doing something stupid? I have a second problem with this same document. It contains a number of JPEG images (screenshots). These are captured on my linux box, so I can't use sprites. Saving in native format is once again fine, but when saved as DDL, and re-loaded, when I scroll down to the first graphic, I get an error box stating "Incomplete or corrupt JPEG data". The OPro window then reduces to minimum size. If I restore this, and scroll down, the first screenshot is indeed shown to be corrupt. Reloading this works, and all the other screenshots are fine. However, saving as ddl, and reloading, shows the identical circumstances. Once again, is this my incompetence, or have I tripped over something nasty? In case anyone's wondering about my interest in DDL files, this is so that I can keep the diffs in subversion, to control the changes. However, this is not the cause of the problem, as saving the document locally to the RISC OS hard disk shows the same problems. A cut-down version of this document is available in DDL and native format at http://www.vanderhoff.org/tony/doc.zip. I tried loading your downloaded documents (DDLFile and text) into OvationPro v2.76 running on RISC OS 5.13 (Iyonix). DDLFile consistently failed; OvationPro crashed with a type 2 error. The file 'text' loaded; the first page looked OK, but scrolling down to page 3 froze OvationPro and the machine: the mouse arrow was stuck on the scroll tool. The situation could not be recovered or terminated with Alt-Break; those keys had no effect. The only recovery was a total reset. I can't help further I'm afraid apart from to suggest there is an error somewhere within the actual original document. Try saving as plain text (no styles) and then laying the whole out again on a totally new set of Master Pages. It may be that there are conflicting styles somewhere within the OvPro document. At some point in the last year I discovered a bug in the way image data is stored in DDL files. Things only went wrong if the file was a multiple of 64 bytes (or something) long, so it was a rare occurrence. Anyway I suspect this problem is only fixed on the very latest RISC OS version - 2.77 19th March 2007. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. Have I missed out on > something somewhere? There seem to have been various incremental updates that don't increase the version number; the one I'm running is the 19th March one. You can check this by getting the latest update from the website. As a suggestion to David, it might be worth adding a alphabetic suffix to the number if a 'full' version update isn't required. That is: 2.77a, 2.77b, 2.77c, etc. This seems to have become fairly common in the RISC OS world, where an update to 2.78 isn't justified, and would be better (IMHO) than several versions with just a difference in date. -- Steve Fryatt - Leeds, England http://www.stevefryatt.org.uk/ From davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Sat Jul 21 18:16:44 2007 Received: from pop3.demon.co.uk by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1ICISA-2QvGPo-02-Cw9.pilling@pop3.demon.co.uk> for ; Sat, 21 Jul 2007 18:16:44 +0100 Return-Path: Received: from punt3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1ICISA-2QvGPo-02-Cw9; Sat, 21 Jul 2007 17:09:14 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.77] (lhlo=anchor-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt3.mail.demon.net with lmtp id 1ICISA-2QvGPo-02 for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Sat, 21 Jul 2007 17:09:14 +0000 Received: from [206.53.239.180] (helo=turing.freelists.org) by anchor-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1ICIS9-0006Ra-PL for flist@pilling.demon.co.uk; Sat, 21 Jul 2007 17:09:14 +0000 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id D7DEC715E70 for ; Sat, 21 Jul 2007 13:07:01 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 11246-03-28 for ; Sat, 21 Jul 2007 13:07:01 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id D42A8715244 for ; Sat, 21 Jul 2007 13:06:58 -0400 (EDT) Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list davidpilling); Sat, 21 Jul 2007 13:06:18 -0400 (EDT) X-Original-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Delivered-To: davidpilling@freelists.org Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id A795971558B for ; Sat, 21 Jul 2007 13:06:18 -0400 (EDT) Received: from turing.freelists.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (turing.freelists.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 10816-03-47 for ; Sat, 21 Jul 2007 13:06:18 -0400 (EDT) Received: from lon-mail-1.gradwell.net (lon-mail-1.gradwell.net [193.111.201.125]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 4E6C4715CA0 for ; Sat, 21 Jul 2007 13:06:16 -0400 (EDT) Received: from magpieway.net ([87.127.17.194] helo=tony-lx.magpieway.net country=GB ident=tony$pop3*vanderhoff$org) by lon-mail-1.gradwell.net with esmtpa (Gradwell gwh-smtpd 1.243) id 46a23d8a.172c4.112 for davidpilling@freelists.org; Sat, 21 Jul 2007 18:08:26 +0100 (envelope-sender ) Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2007 18:08:25 +0100 From: Tony van der Hoff To: davidpilling@freelists.org Subject: [softwarelist] Re: Ovation Pro DDL file weirdness Message-ID: In-Reply-To: <7d0de9054f.roger@roger.red-squirrel.com> References: <7d0de9054f.roger@roger.red-squirrel.com> Mail-Followup-To: davidpilling@freelists.org User-Agent: Gemini/2.28m (Qt/3.3.6) (Linux-i686) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain X-archive-position: 16 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org Errors-to: davidpilling-bounce@freelists.org X-original-sender: tony@vanderhoff.org Precedence: normal Reply-to: davidpilling@freelists.org List-help: List-unsubscribe: List-software: Ecartis version 1.0.0 List-Id: davidpilling X-List-ID: davidpilling List-subscribe: List-owner: List-post: List-archive: X-list: davidpilling X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at localhost.localdomain On 21 Jul at 15:09 Roger Foden wrote in message <7d0de9054f.roger@roger.red-squirrel.com> > In message > Tony van der Hoff wrote: > > > Ovation Pro 2.76 running under RISC OS. > [snip] > I tried loading your downloaded documents (DDLFile and text) into > OvationPro v2.76 running on RISC OS 5.13 (Iyonix). > > DDLFile consistently failed; OvationPro crashed with a type 2 error. > > The file 'text' loaded; the first page looked OK, but scrolling down to > page 3 froze OvationPro and the machine: the mouse arrow was stuck on the > scroll tool. It's late and I have just had a quick look. Is there a problem with the grouping of the four frames? I ask because I can't ungroup the grouped frame in either the native nor DDL files. Duplicates of those frames will, however, ungroup. -- ______________________________________________________________________ Brian Jordan >From somewhere in North Hampshire. England.
