These are the likely contents of the soon to ship CD. http://www.davidpilling.info/cd Included is version 2.75 (1st August 2005) of Ovation Pro for Windows. http://www.davidpilling.info/cd/main.html Bringing together some recent threads, the above went out via RSS, so you should have seen it there. Second this version fixes the problem with omitted headers/footers etc. Expanding a bit, what is on the web site now is exactly what I expect to be on the CD. The CD contents have been on the web site for some months. In that time there have not been big changes, mostly the changes have been tinkering with documentation and fixing bugs in the main program. I've not heard a single comment on the CD contents. Presumably the feedback will start once the CDs ship 8-) It is interesting that people want a physical CD in their hands. Something that will be out of date almost immediately. The online version on the other hand will always be current. A bit like the old puzzle, would you prefer a watch that is right twice a day or one that is always wrong? The first of course is the broken watch. Anyway I'd want a real CD. I expect to start shipping CDs next week and to complete the backlog of 100 orders in a few weeks. However I'll let you know more precise information later. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. The server understood the request, but is refusing to fulfill it. Authorization will not help and the request SHOULD NOT be repeated. It looks as if these two links are just pointing to the parent directories for the DPD and PDF documents, and I suppose the error message means directory listing is being disallowed. Hmm. This is a known problem, and you have been warned about it. The web server does not allow directories to be opened. However if the same contents were on CD then you would be able to open the folder. To get around this I have provided alternatives to opening folders. Usually in the form of a zip file containing the folder contents. My aim is to have just one set of files that can appear on CD or on a web site (less errors, less messing about, only one interface for users to learn). However I don't want to upset people and presumably if it is a big enough irritation I will change things. Possible solutions are: (a) change the web servers behaviour (b) write conditional HTML so that pages appear differently online to on CD. Another unhappy aspect is the huge quantity of warnings that Windows throws up "deadly virus may destroy your computer - are you sure?" I've considered going in for code signing to get around some of it. Any ideas? -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. Sorry, I never saw the warning. Must have missed it. Never enough time to read things thoroughly. Where was it? Anyway, I would happily settle for a small comment on the page, to the effect that these links do not work on the web, only on the CD. Don't think that the web server should be changed. In the last couple of weeks two people have approached me and said they can't use DPScan on their Iyonix because it complains about a "broken directory". DPScan has a virtual memory system. If its requirements for memory are greater than the memory available, it stores data on disc. That was quite a useful feature in 1993 when machines usually had no more than 4MB. It makes less sense on an Iyonix with 512MB. DPScan choices let you set the maximum amount of memory that DPScan will use. Typically this defaults to a modest value - 9MB. If you are using DPScan on an Iyonix it is a *good idea* to increase this amount, say to 100MB or more. Anyway if you don't have enough memory set in choices and you load a large enough image then DPScan will create a scrap file, and this is when in the above cases the broken directory error appeared. A broken directory implies some disc corruption. It is not quite "I've lost my lifes work", but it is one step in that direction. The worry, is if this is a pattern. Is there something about Iyonix or DPScan that leads the folder in which DPScan stores its scrap file to become corrupt? The latest version of DPScan is 1.22 (which is better for the Iyonix) and you can upgrade from: http://www.davidpilling.net/sc122.zip -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. Ah! Solved it myself! I remembered one other change I had made - in response to something you wrote (I think), I used icon bar>middle button>Choices>Memory>MaxRAM to increase the setting, as I thought, but in fact (probably I was ham-fisted) I had reduced it, with the consequences which I described.
