Searching this list, the last comment from David that I can see is that DDL is not documented anywhere. Is this still correct? If so, can I just clarify the basic format of a DDL file? It appears to consist of a series of = sets of data, the order of which is significant (at least as far as pages, frames and text stories go). Ovation Pro appears to split separate blocks onto different lines, so you might get something like: "This is some text " {bold 1} "in bold" {bold} " and some which isn't" but I would guess that this isn't required. O-Pro also seems to impose a maximum line length for text, but again I assume that this isn't a requirement? Lines starting // appear to be comments, which run to the end of a line. Can these appear anywhere, or just in the top level outside all the {} blocks? Given the apparent C heritage, are /* ... */ comments as well? Also, it would be nice ultimately to package up the converter something like Richard Murray's OvHTML, so that a "DDF" option appears in the Save dialogue. Can third parties do this, and is the method documented anywhere? Where did those who have already written DDL to something converters get their info from? Educated guesswork, or something more reliable? -- Steve Fryatt - Leeds, England http://www.stevefryatt.org.uk/ -- To unsubscribe from this list, email listadmin@davidpilling.net with the words UNSUBSCRIBE softwarelist in the body of the message Mailing list provided and hosted by www.spellings.net From owner-softwarelist@davidpilling.net Sat Feb 5 13:48:50 2005 Received: from 127.0.0.1 by pilling.demon.co.uk with POP3 id <1CxQDi-0007ke-48-0007l4."pilling:pop3.demon.co.uk"@127.0.0.1> for <"pilling:pop3.demon.co.uk"@127.0.0.1> ; Sat, 5 Feb 2005 13:48:50 +0000 Return-path: Received: from punt-3.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 1CxQDi-0007ke-48; Sat, 05 Feb 2005 13:43:31 +0000 Received: from [194.217.242.77] (helo=anchor-hub.mail.demon.net) by punt-3.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1CxQDi-0007ke-48; Sat, 05 Feb 2005 13:43:30 +0000 Received: from [212.69.217.31] (helo=smtp-relay02.x-mailer.co.uk) by anchor-hub.mail.demon.net with esmtp id 1CxQDi-0001zf-49; Sat, 05 Feb 2005 13:43:30 +0000 Received: from [212.69.206.29] (helo=svr1.spellings.net) by smtp-relay02.x-mailer.co.uk with esmtp (Exim 4.30) id 1CxQDT-0004mg-Ke; Sat, 05 Feb 2005 13:43:15 +0000 Received: (from admin@localhost) by svr1.spellings.net (8.11.7/8.11.7) id j15Dgpo19007 for softwarelist-OutGoing; Sat, 5 Feb 2005 13:42:51 GMT Received: from anchor-post-35.mail.demon.net (anchor-post-35.mail.demon.net [194.217.242.85]) by svr1.spellings.net (8.11.7/8.11.7) with ESMTP id j15Dgo219003 for ; Sat, 5 Feb 2005 13:42:50 GMT Delivered-To: Received: from hiasmcc.demon.co.uk ([83.104.231.211] helo=[127.0.0.1]) by anchor-post-35.mail.demon.net with esmtp (Exim 4.42) id 1CxQBU-0002fO-GH for softwarelist@davidpilling.net; Sat, 05 Feb 2005 13:41:12 +0000 Date: Sat, 5 Feb 2005 13:42:41 +0000 From: Colin McQueen To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net Subject: [softwarelist] Re: DDL Description Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Mail-Followup-To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net User-Agent: Gemini/2.07 (Qt/3.3.4) (Windows-XP) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-softwarelist@davidpilling.net Precedence: bulk Reply-To: softwarelist@davidpilling.net X-maillist: softwarelist X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-4.8 required=5.0 tests=AWL,BAYES_01,EMAIL_ATTRIBUTION,IN_REP_TO,QUOTED_EMAIL_TEXT, REFERENCES,REPLY_WITH_QUOTES,SIGNATURE_LONG_SPARSE, USER_AGENT autolearn=ham version=2.55 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.55 (1.174.2.19-2003-05-19-exp) Hi Steve Fryatt wrote: > I have been looking at writing a conversion tool to turn DDL files > into something akin to DDF, and as a result have been trying to work > out the format of a DDL file. There are even some options in the code produced that are either ignored or, like the stay with stay together items not bug free but sort of working. So you can actually create DDL files that will make OvPro do things that you can't make it do any other way. If I dig around I might find my old experimental Organizer scripts that did page size creation etc during an export. Ah, yes, ADFS::HardDisc4.$.Bundled.Organizer.Organizer157.Exports.Address.OvPOrg Never got as far as putting it out for people to try - the butterfly mind moved on. I was puzzled by the fact that, while the names given to styles and colours (for example) get referenced elsewhere in the file, the names given to things like text stories didn't seem to crop up anywhere else. Presumably it simplifies things as I can just pass through the file, outputting the stories I find in the order I find them. > > Ovation Pro appears to split separate blocks onto different lines, so > > you might get something like: but I would guess that this isn't > > required. > > Yes the places where lines are split do not matter, OP attempts to make > DDL files easy to read. There is the DocBook standard which is all things to all people - or so they say - it includes indexing, referencing and ..... There is an xslt transformation to formatting objects which then can be converted to PDF - alth9ugh I believe that there is somewhere a program that converts DocBook to PDF directly. In my opinion it is far too heavyweight a solution - a bit like PL/I! Some thoughts about this. USB scanner drivers should work *perfectly*. When I was developing the drivers I saw all the bad times - every other scan crashing and all that. However eventually Castle and Simtec sorted out the problems and it should all now work reliably. Adding USB support dragged on for about six months, during which time I had to keep pestering people to get things right. At the end of that I keep meeting people who say it doesn't work and/or who assume unreliability is all they can expect. I'm not so sure that the version of DPScan has anything to do with any scanning problem. TWAIN drivers and DPScan are separate things. It is the TWAIN driver that talks to your scanner. There's not much I can do about any problems there may be, the likely culprit is the USB system. However as I said last week there was some variation in the USB TWAIN drivers that people got. I will send you the latest version. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. Box 22 Thornton Cleveleys Blackpool. Doesn't work using your syntax - presumably the forward slash is confusing matters. I can access the file by using a filename of /without/ the /rar extension. Output from using UnRAR shown below:- *unrar x 3dh_map UNRAR 3.30 freeware Copyright (c) 1993-2004 Eugene Roshal Extracting from 3dh_map.rar Extracting 3DH Map.bmp OK All OK As you can see, this session worked, but I omitted the /rar from the filename. *unrar l 3dh_map/rar UNRAR 3.30 freeware Copyright (c) 1993-2004 Eugene Roshal Cannot open 3dh_map/rar.rar Note the spurious .rar in the filename on the output for the second session. Retrying the second session and omitting the /rar from the filename produced the expected results. In both these sessions, the archive 3DH_Map/rar was in the same directory as UnRAR. Attempting to access the file when it was located in another directory produced another failure:- *unrar x IDEFS::WorkSpace.$.Files.Graham's.Website.Subs.3DH_Map UNRAR 3.30 freeware Copyright (c) 1993-2004 Eugene Roshal Cannot open IDEFS::WorkSpace.$.Files.Grahams.Website.Subs.3DH_Map No files to extract Presumably, this has something to do with RISC OS using full stops as directory separators? Such niggles aside, UnRAR is pretty useful one I figured out how to use it. The printer went berserk, the print head moving quickly to the >end of its travel and the override ratchet rattled away. I can only plead innocence. For a non-postscript printer (assumption) OPW will just use the windows printer drivers, which should prevent any odd printing problems. OPW also is very modest in the changes it makes to Windows when installed. It doesn't update shared dll's or anything like that. However you can just have the effect of OPW doing something which has not been done on the system before - printing a slightly different page area, letting you set some printer setting which you've not set before. However not the sort of story one wants to hear, and it is a pity there's nothing we can do to investigate further. The sort of things I would have been interested in, are could other programs print (e.g. notepad), was a reinstall necessary - would powering off everything and then back on have restored things, had you got the right driver for the printer (is there a later version of the driver on the web?). Had the printer settings changed. Interesting insight. So if the printer finally bites the dust in the next couple of weeks, I wonder who the owner will blame... One of my least favourite things was when people used to write to newsgroups along the lines; "I used Spark to archive some files and then found my hard disc was corrupt, I lost 50 years work" What can you say. -- David Pilling email: david@pilling.demon.co.uk web: http://www.davidpilling.net post: David Pilling P.O. It doesn't update shared dll's or anything like that. However that isn't true of WordPerfect. Past experience has shown that WP uses the system in various "unusual ways" One such on early Windows versions was downloading sets of printer fonts (er,why?) which disrupted printing for other programs and required a power cycle of the printer when changing from WP to Word or WordPad (as one example) On any system behaving strangely and WP being involved at any point the prime candidate for the problem is WP. It works provided you don't do anything to upset it, like changing OS revision, installing various MS software... -- Steve Pampling -- To unsubscribe from this list, email listadmin@davidpilling.net with the words UNSUBSCRIBE softwarelist in the body of the message Mailing list provided and hosted by www.spellings.net
