So now, not only can an object be nudged around the page, but the size of the object can be nudged. Each edge of an object may be selected so that the nudge will only move that side. Creating the 'interface' to this resizing feature has been quite a challenge, keeping the palette window compact has been my main concern. I do feel it may seem a bit confusing at first, but I have _tried_ to explain things in the accompanying manual (probably not very well). So I would appreciate feedback of any comments and suggestions. I would also stress that this version hasn't undergone the extensive testing that previous versions have had before being made publicly available. So if you download this version and experience any problems at all, however slight they may be, would you please let me know. For those that don't know what it does: The NudgePal applet adds a palette that allows the selected object(s) to be nudged into a new position or resized, by use of arrow buttons. The amount the selected object(s) are nudged is adjustable from the Nudge palette. Short-cut key macros can optionally be configured to perform the nudging. 'lock' here has nothing to do with grid lock, or any other sort of 'lock' that you'll find mentioned in the user guide. The error should never occur in normal use. Is it possible that the env. printing demands a "sideways" layout. Very often env. are input into the printer "sidewise". But if the your document is not "Sideways" oriented, the printer will believe that you insert the env. as you would with plain paper. I discovered this problem trying to use an Ovation (v1.48s) env. layout on a OvPro (v2.46) layout. So check the "sideways" option with your document. If you do not succeed, send me directly an example of your problem. But mind I'll be absent for the next 5 days. So do not expect a "rush-job". You need to define a new paper size in !Printers and then use that before trying to print to an envelope (or any non-A4 paper size) in the same way you probably made an envelope layout in OvaPro. I have the 990Cxi printer which is similar and has the envelope slot and it works fine. Assuming you are using a DL envelope, give the paper size a new name and use these settings: Paper Width 110.0mm Height 220.0mm (which effectively sets it as landscape) and all other settings to zero, then save it. Now when you load Printers it will load your additional paper definitions too (I have quite a few for different things). Next Shift-Select on the printer icon and select your DL envelope paper from the menu selection and click O.K. Insert your envelope and send the print to the printer. Do not set landscape in your document as you have defined this in the paper size. If you need to make any minor position adjustments you can alter the envelope (paper) size settings with margin figures. Some precision is needed to track down the problem. I tried deleting all the body text of chapter 16 of the manual while this chapter is part of one single document, being the OvPro manual (13.5Mbyte). Selection size is 10k. The text was deleted within a few seconds. I tried the same on an OvPro document having an index generated by IdxPro. Here I can mention the following experiences from the past. A. Deleting text of the Index chapter (at the end of the document): 1. Selecting all text and then delete results in a hanging machine. But I must admit I did not have the patience to wait more than half an hour to proceed with a hard break! (This was at first discovered on the Script manual. I mention this specifically for Mr D. Breakwell for testing himself. I happened onto the problem as I suddenly had 2 Indices, one within the other. My mistake, but therefore needing the total deletion of the Index.) 2. Selecting some text (not too much!) at the *end* of the Index, delete was more or less immediate. Repeating this procedure a few times, one could then select all the rest of the text to have it deleted more or less immediately. Skipping said 'repeat partially delete procedure' generally led to a hanging machine once more. B. Deleting text within the main body of the document 1. Indeed very slow, but it does get deleted in the end. What did appear just before writing this message is that the whole OvPro manual as one document, having no bookmarks, does not show this problem. Based on my present testing, I cannot yet confirm that the slow deletion only exists if a document contains IdxPro bookmarks or not. Or possibly other bookmarks. Or that the problem is non existent in other documents. Is the IdxPro applet the cause? Or the !!!!!!!bm Applet?? The problem does not exist in a document without bookmarks, even though both applets mentioned were active when I did the testing stated in my 1st paragraph above. Hope this helps experts to track down the problem. Can you possibly check whether by mistake your document does have a Bookmark, being recognized by the IdxPro applet? To do this, load the document presuming of course the IdxPro applet is installed, then hit F4. This opens the IdxPro window. To the right of the top left icon (probably showing 0/ ) are 2 bumper icons. Click on the top one. If the entry in said top left icon does change, you do have bookmarks in your document. In routine idx_bmdelfn make the following changes: setbmtozone(bms, bme); if (idx_no_marks > 0) <<<<<<< INSERT { <<<<<<< INSERT idx_checkdelete(bms,bme,1); stat=idx_checkcount(bms,bme); }; <<<<<<< INSERT bmdelete(bms); bmdelete(bme); This then only applies the 'intelligent' delete function when idx markers actually exist in the document. It is also worth noting that Roger has released a revised version of !!!!!!bm that removes a bug that can cause delays when deleting bookmarks. I'm glad you spotted that, because after I told you it would be hard to fix I found out it was not so bad. >I found that the bug is back as soon as you capitalize the first character >is capitalise of the word. I suspect the problem is that I've only fixed the bug for words which are not capitalised. For hyphenation the code ignores case. Presumeably someone could come along and say they wanted capitalised words hyphenating in different ways. And sometimes the oddly capitalised word will mean something special. And hyphenating capitalised words may be considered bad practice anyway. >I mean, does the dictionary have to contain at least two versions of each >word - a normal one and a capitalized one? That might be a workaround for now. Whilst checking this out, I found that hyphenation does not treat the new fixed spaces correctly. It won't do any great damage, but now I know about it I'll fix it. Its a bit more clever than that though: When selecting, Tidymove will: leave terminal spaces, tabs and newlines, newpages etc alone treat hard spaces as joining two words so they are never split leave punctuation behind unless you select it yourself. When cutting, Tidymove arranges the spaces sensibly. (It leaves invisibles other than spaces alone) - Be careful how you use this; multiple clicks will start to eat your document! The applet, called PastePos, allows objects on the clipboard to be pasted in position. To explain it - When an object is cut or copied to the clipboard the applet will remember the position on the page that the object was in. A new entry on the Edit Menu 'Paste in position' (or a button macro) can be used to paste the object at same position. The applet is available from: http://www.crawford-print.co.uk/resources.html *** PLEASE NOTE: *** This applet will only work with Ovation Pro version 2.64 or above, as it uses some new functions that have been introduced in this version. I should also point out that testing has been very limited due to 2.64 being so new. I am unsure how this applet will get on with other applets that may alter the normal cut/copy operation of Ovation Pro. So as usual let me know of any problems. My thanks to David Pilling for all his hard work, and for putting up with my endless requests for more functions. Presumably, if you cut frame A to clipboard, move frame B and then wish to paste frame A back in the same position then you don't have to undo the move of frame B. The description would also suggest that, more usefully, if you are copying/moving a frame or group of frames between pages then it will paste them in the same position relative to the corner as they were originally (Something which my mother as editor of the local parish magazine comes up against frequently :) Yours, Geoff. -- Geoff Youngs, Technical Director // solutions.web - Internet Consultants \\ Tel. +44 (0) 23 9241 2340 // Web : http://www.solutionsweb.co.uk/ -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message From owner-ovationpro@omega.barnet.ac.uk Sat Jun 23 02:14:34 2001 Received: from punt-11.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA152051 for opro ; Sat, 23 Jun 101 02:14:31 GMT Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for opro@pilling.demon.co.uk id 993245493:10:24051:67; Fri, 22 Jun 2001 21:31:33 GMT Received: from omega.barnet.ac.uk ([194.82.200.3]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id aa1023510; 22 Jun 2001 21:31 GMT Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.11.3/8.11.3) id f5MLUMr09861 for ovationpro-list; Fri, 22 Jun 2001 22:30:22 +0100 Received: from mserv1b.vianw.co.uk (mserv1b.vianw.co.uk [195.102.240.137]) by omega.barnet.ac.uk (8.11.3/8.11.3) with ESMTP id f5MLUI509858 for ; Fri, 22 Jun 2001 22:30:18 +0100 Received: from [194.119.179.59] (helo=Caslon.english.co.uk) by mserv1b.vianw.co.uk with smtp (Exim 3.22 #5) id 15DYVW-0001AB-00 for ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk; Fri, 22 Jun 2001 22:30:27 +0100 Received: from Gill (10.0.1.1) by Caslon.english.co.uk; Fri, 22 Jun 2001 22:17:01 +0100 Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 22:17:13 +0100 From: David Graddol To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Subject: Re: PastePos - a new Applet Message-ID: <773cc8e4a%Support@Gill.english.co.uk> In-Reply-To: <4a8eb2c24fgav@crawford-print.co.uk> X-Organization: The English Company (UK) Ltd X-Mailer: Messenger v1.41d for RISC OS MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii User-Agent: POPstar/2.02 Sender: owner-ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ovationpro@lists.barnet.ac.uk X-maillist: ovationpro Gavin Crawford wrote: > Hi, > > I've uploaded a new applet to my website. It allows objects to be copied from say one page into another, but after the objects are pasted they are moved to the original x,y position. And also from one document to another. ArtWorks has a similar feature - using a 'SHIFT + CTRL + V' and I wanted the same thing with Ovation Pro, except that that particular key sequence is already used for the Reverse text effect. The Fixed spaces can be used not only as a space but also as a 'move' by NOT having the Delimiter option ticked. This 'move' allows for special effects to be created. I've had a go at some text in a curve by combining rotated text with the spaces. This was created by hand editing a DDL file. A process of trial and error was used until the results looked acceptable. It's not something you would want to do often as it takes so long to do, and can be done in something like ArtWorks or DrawWorks much easier. But it does allow you to spell check the words. David Pilling suggested I posted the DDL file here, as others may be interested in the result. We could even start a Best Special Effects Competition? Well 2.64 has only been out a couple of days, and for the purpose of finding such 'bugs'. I suspect we're in deep water here. Firstly I have in the past had complaints about superscript just overwriting the line above, and without thinking I thought I'd fix it whilst I was tinkering with the same part of the code to allow vertical fixed spaces. Now you mention it ISTR this could be a long running saga, of Impression working one way, and some people thinking different ways are right or wrong. Thanks. It does a nice job. Of course the page size has to be the same. Also big thanks for the Nudge applet with the useful menu entry to save the position of the window. > It allows objects to be copied from say one page into another, but after > the objects are pasted they are moved to the original x,y position. > And also from one document to another. > > ArtWorks has a similar feature - using a 'SHIFT + CTRL + V' and I wanted > the same thing with Ovation Pro, except that that particular key > sequence is already used for the Reverse text effect. The only thing that is missing -not due to your applet- is the option to make the masterframe local. Or to group it with other local windows. That feature in Impression -as I recall correctly- was also part of the discussion about copying pages between documents. Maybe I have overlooked something, but as far as I can see: To copy the contents of a page is still a two-step procedure: one for text and one for the local objects. Embedded objects can be part of one of these procedures. Probably a third step is needed, when the background of the masterframe isn't the default. mrs. Yes - it is available from http://www1.che.hw.ac.uk/~ovpro/applications.html The original version has the numbers "77" hardwired into the app. In the alternative version I have replaced the values 77 with 255, so there is now a limit of 255 applets. The weird thing is that when I print the Index to file and then view it in Riscript, the pages are reversed (i.e last page first, not a mirror image) and only the odd numbered pages are reproduced. The PDF file generated comes out the same, not suprisingly. All other chapters come out OK. So what is going on? When I spoke of effects, I meant what you can apply in Styles (like rotate). Vertical shift (button/macro) is cumulative. How a vertical move can give the impression of being cumulative, I have described in my reply to Gavin Crawford. I don't think it serves anyone to repeat it here. I also mentioned (my) not understanding of the delimiter option. It came to my mind, when I read the connection Gavin made between this option, move, and his special effect. Maybe you can explain a bit more extensive than found in the text file, that comes with Ovation Pro 2.64. Maybe I am to blame and can I find it in the manual? > >In general, a 'repeat command' would be useful. Or is this already available? > > How do you mean? Repeat the last used command. A bit like a redo, without an undo. Shortcut and button. Examples: 1) Three windows to which I want to apply a border. I select the first and apply border. Click next one and 'repeat command', click last one and 'repeat command'. 2) I want to insert date at several places. Insert the first. Go to the next place and 'repeat command'. 3) I have a plain text. I want to apply a style to several parts. If I have short-cuts defined I can use these. I can use the style menu. When I have to apply the same style to different parts all over the document, it would be handy to apply the style once and use 'repeat command' for the following. 4) I want to change fontsize (or font) at different places (not as a style), apply it once and use 'repeat command' So, this 'repeat command' would do, whatever the last command did. A little less use of mouse and less annoyance, when 'select' is used instead of 'adjust' to keep a menu or window open less annoyance, when a short-cut doesn't come to the mind, that recently has been seen but already forgotten after its first use, less buttons/macro's on the button bar, because, after once using the menu, 'repeat command' can be used. It isn't my invention. This command is present in Pipedream, where I have put it under F6. Probably also my most used function key in that program :-) mrs. Yes, and specify the value for each move separately and differently. What you did, partly on your first document, later on in the saved DDL. Maybe this is more a question to David Pilling. He mentions the importance of the Delimiter option related to spellcheck in the text about the new features in 2.64. You also mention you have switched the Delimiter option off and the possibility to edit the text. So my question was related to your explanation of 'move'. I have to admit I still don't understand this relation with configuring the Delimiter option off. When I have applied a fixed space -no matter which of the 4 combinations between (non) break and (non) delimiter) I used-, in the find box I always have to use \s to find the space. For your word Special I have to use S\sp\se\sc\si\sa\sl to get it found ... . This isn't the case when I use a vertical shift. And yes, I used the value '0' for the horizontal move to compare the fixed space feature with the vertical shift feauture that doesn't allows entering values. Of course in that case I can use 'Special' in the find box without adding the wildcards \s for the spaces. > > > I understand: I have tried something simular earlier, but an effect > > can't be cumulative and I had to define every change I wanted in a > > separate effect. Editing the DDL file, I copied the > rotation and move between each letter and repeatedly altered the values > until it started to look right (checking the results each time in > Ovation Pro). It is almost impossible to do this editing in an Ovation Pro Window. So it is nice to have an example (your DDL) by hand. Whit a negative horizontal value it is already very difficult to edit such a special line on screen. With NO horizontal value, it is even harder. Entering such an only-vertical move is no problem. Editing it is something else. To change values, you have to be BEFORE the space that starts on the same place as the following character, otherwise a new one is added on the same place. It gives the false impression of a cumulation. Doing this more than once is not amazingly a source of big trouble. Of course a DDL will show, what can't be seen in an Ovation pro window. I know, it is better to define the shift in a Style (scope selection), when I want better control than with the vertical shift buttons. But this isn't cumulative, not even deceptive cumulative. > It's a good job that the Fixed space feature has been added as it > allows you to manually adjust the positions of each letter. I agree, despite the trouble I brought to me myself in my experimenting, a fixed space has to be present in a DTP program and it certainly is better used in a normal way. This experimenting also showed clearly, that effects like you made with your Special Effect (if you want to do it in Ovation Pro) are best made 'stand alone'. Incorporating these in a paragraph isn't a good idea. Lines above or beneath are crossed ... . Thanks for your help, Tonnie mrs. It would be nice. As to delimiters. I can only contrast say kernining the letters A and W in 'WASHINGTON' where you change the space between them, but don't want to imply that you've created two words, with writing 'George Washington' where the space implies there are two separate words. This may be one of those situations where giving users a general feature with lots of buttons makes their eyes glaze over. Perhaps if there were two separate smaller features (extended kerning and fixed space). Fair point about search and replace. Although the real worry (which just occured to me) is if the whole word feature in s&r works (probably not). It does a nice job. Of course the page size has to be the same. The page size shouldn't make any difference. When the object is copied its x and y position (as shown in the Info Palette) is recorded. This position is relative to the page origin at the top left, so when pasted in position, even if the page size is different, the object will still be at the same position as it was when copied. If an object is pasted into a smaller page than the one it was copied from, there may be a possibility that the object could be positioned outside the page or even outside the current Pasteboard area. If this happens then you could do one of following to rectify the problem:- 1. Use the Info palette or Object -> Modify... to reposition the object. 2. Undo the paste. - This will remove the object and take you back to the point of waiting for you to paste again. If the SELECT mouse button is clicked again to set the paste then this paste will not move the object to the stored position but just perform a normal paste. If you don't want to do this normal type paste then use Undo again. 3. Delete the object while it is selected and use a normal paste. 4. Use the Nudge applet (with a large nudge value) to bring the object back into view. 5. View the Pasteboard using the View -> Options to see if the object is there. Or try increasing the Pasteboard width in the Document preferences (Misc -> Preferences). > The only thing that is missing -not due to your applet- is the option > to make the masterframe local. > Or to group it with other local windows. That feature in Impression > -as I recall correctly- was also part of the discussion about copying > pages between documents. I haven't checked to see what was originally discussed, but I knew the subject had been debated. It was sometime after that I asked David if paste in position was planned, but at that time it wasn't a high priority, so I looked at a way of doing it from an applet. I did write one some time ago that did what I was after, but it relied on some 'nasty hacks' that it had to do to Ovation Pro to intercept the cut and copy actions. All was fine until I found out other applets did similar hacks that caused a clash. So after many discussions with David the new functions needed were introduced in version 2.64. The PastePos applet only takes a note of the position of objects as they are cut or copied to the clipboard. In OPro it is not the fact that it is a master frame that stops it from being copied - master frames CAN be copied (but not cut). It's when a frame is Linked that stops it from being copied. The Impression way is to copy master frames ignoring any linking, allowing them to be pasted back as local frames, but it doesn't copy any (local) text that may be in the frames. > Maybe I have overlooked something, but as far as I can see: To copy the > contents of a page is still a two-step procedure: one for text and one > for the local objects. I'm not sure what you mean with the last sentence. But yes, the complexity of the page and how all its parts have been created will affect the process of re-creating a complete page, but at least the Paste in position will save you having to write down manually the positions of the objects. Also remember that objects on Master pages can be copied and 'pasted in position' into other Master pages. Wow! that was meant to be a quick reply. After some correspondence with Tonnie Demarteau, we have come up with an additional way of tackling such problems. This is to modify the !Applets application to allow a second one to be run at the same time. This allows you to, for example, separate your applets into groups, such as "use occasionally" and "might be useful" or "David's official" and "third party". The two applet managers can sit side by side on the iconbar if necessary, with different icons, and use their independent stores. If anyone would like to give it a try, let me know and I will e-mail it to you (indicate how you want the file attached - RISC OS MIME, PC MIME, UUE). The file is about 48 kB. This second version also allows up to 255 files in the storage directory, so you should be ok unless you possess more than 510 applets. Then I guess a third one could be produced (or write a new manager from scratch). Thanks for this explanation. When kerning is applied the white, defined inside the glyphs (consisting of shape and surrounding 'white' to give the character the width and the height) is increased or decreased. No new element (like a space character) is added. I don't think it can be done in the fixed space feature, because you always ADD something to a word. For a search this addition has to be in the search request. > This may be one of those situations where giving users a general feature > with lots of buttons makes their eyes glaze over. Perhaps if there > were two separate smaller features (extended kerning and fixed space). Maybe you could restrict the fixed space feature to a default space character (ASCII 32 taken from the font in use), to which non-broken can be switched on or off. Default on, I suggest. Not every font contains a ASCII 160 (non broken space), but always ASCII 32. If the user wants another value, it can still be changed, like other character widths by manual kerning (extended kerning if you prefer that name) or -if supported by the font in use- autokerning. Many autokerning entries are combinations with ASCII 32. In the Modify format menu, there are already the options autokerning and enhanced justification. Both can be applied to a selection of text. Wouldn't it make sense to add an option manual kerning, where horizontal and/or vertical can be applied with control like you now offer in the fixed space feature? Vertical shift and the key combinations control+shift+; and control+shift+' can be used, but don't give much user control, because it is a kind of tracking. BTW applying vertical shift BEFORE using return (without lock to grid) gives a nice layout (that is selection moves up or down, without overwriting other text. Applying it afterwards causes a mess ... . > Fair point about search and replace. Although the real worry (which just > occured to me) is if the whole word feature in s&r works (probably not). As far as I have seen, the whole word feature works ok, as long as there isn't anything added to a word. :-) I don't think a construction or structure like this is difficult to understand or use. In my case I had problems with my Kyocera PS printer which turned out to be because something on the PS dot sub-menu was selected inappropriately and that means that - for the moment - every time I load OP from CD I have to manually check that that thing is unset before I print anything. I think at the same time I've learnt to look at the other printing options more closely than I used to. -- Jeremy C B Nicoll - my opinions are my own. -- To unsubscribe from this list, email majordomo@lists.barnet.ac.uk with the words UNSUBSCRIBE ovationpro in the body of the message
