As far as I know the latest version of ImageFS from Alternative Publishing will convert WMF files. Pantone colours are an irrelevance. Pantone colours are specific coloured inks mainly used for spot colour work. All colour printers which I know print using the CMYK systems. There is no direct relationship between CMYK and Pantone colours. What you need is prbably the facility to control the conversion from RGB (used by the monitor) to CMYK (used by the printer). The forthcoming release of Ovation Pro may provide this, but ask Beebug. I am like Ian MacDougall and do not see this, but I do have a similar frustration. I like to have a few template files (letter headings etc.) and load these up and then resave them as "today" or something similar. By doing this, the original template never appears in the document list, and I cannot use this short-cut to load it. I could load and resave, then type on and resave again with a changed file name, but I also like to lock the original for obvious reasons. This of course is not a whinge (after all we have AntChat for that!), merely a comment in case the applet wizzard is listening. -- David Allen From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Wed May 7 13:46:24 1997 Received: from relay-10.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA38497 for david ; Wed, 07 May 97 13:46:22 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 862990804:10:29619:64; Wed, 07 May 97 08:40:04 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id af1025829; 7 May 97 8:39 BST From: cihowe@lucent.com Sender: root@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Tue, 06 May 1997 09:58:06 +0100 Organization: Subject: Re: !Document applet To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19970506.095806.84@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 17:01:31 +0100 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.56 Obvious, but maybe the little data file inside the applet inside Ovation is Locked? I don't know about 'expert' but, I think this is a question of style and not of correctness. How many books have indented paragraphs? A minority, I would suspect. In letter writing, the first line indent would be looked on as old fashioned by most. There are many styles we have inherited from the type writer age (eg underlining and block capitals, as means of giving emphasis). I doubt if indenting first lines is one of these, but I see no reason why it should not fall to the same re-appraisal in the interests effective communication. -- mailto:AlfChamings@ed.ac.uk Health and Safety for the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh tel +44 131 536 3251 fax +44 131 536 3283 From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Wed May 7 13:46:41 1997 Received: from relay-10.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA38503 for david ; Wed, 07 May 97 13:46:39 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 862991118:10:01371:61; Wed, 07 May 97 08:45:18 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id bp1025829; 7 May 97 8:45 BST From:(Mr Breakwell) Sender: root@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Tue, 06 May 1997 10:03:16 +0100 Organization: Subject: Bookmarks To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19970506.100316.35@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Fri, 2 May 97 20:23:36 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.56 Firstly let me say that I am new to the list and to Ovation Pro having just moved from Impression. I love the Applets idea in Ovation and have been looking at using the bookmarks feature to create indexes and the following point has arisen which seem to make it less easy than I thought: The bookmarks do not move with the text contained in them so when editing a document you would appear to either need a lot of complicated programming to move the bookmarks with the text as you edit or loose the relationship between the bookmark and the text reference you wanted to index! I would have thought that the marks should move with the text they mark - just like they do in Word for Windows for example - at present they just mark a place in the document. Additionally it would be a great feature to be able to see bookmarks when the 'Make Invisibles visible' option is selected (I know that take no text space so perhaps they could be indicated by a simple verticle line drawn on the screen) this would allow simple debugging of Applets and also allow a simple review of all the bookmarks in a document (perhaps left by applets in error). -- --. --. --. --. : : --- --- .---------------------------------------------. |_| |_| | _ | | | | |_ | |Internet provider for all Acorn RISC machines| | | |\ | | | | |\| | | '---------------------------------------------' | | | \ |_| |_| | | |__ | davidb@argonet.co.uk From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Wed May 7 13:46:43 1997 Received: from relay-10.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA38504 for david ; Wed, 07 May 97 13:46:42 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 862991217:10:01929:53; Wed, 07 May 97 08:46:57 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id br1025829; 7 May 97 8:45 BST From:(D.A.Symes) Sender: root@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Tue, 06 May 1997 10:03:53 +0100 Organization: Subject: Macro !**? There is an armed truce in our school (and in others I have taught in). I (teaching IT) require pupils to learn to keep the left margin straight (no indent) and to leave a line between paragraphs. The English department require indents. I tell the pupils they should follow the English department when writing and me when DTPing. I have informed the English Dept of this and told them that this is essential for development of DTP work when we move on to using styles etc. I get away with it by insisting the kids follow English Dept rules for all written work. Your English Dept are out of date but you need the support of the IT Dept. If the school attempts to teach IT through other subjects you will almost invariably get a mishmash of bad design ideas and no real learning in this area. BTW I also insist on NO ALL CAPS and no underlining (all rules to be broken in moderation after used and understood). -- _/_/_/ _/ John Cartmell _/ __/_/ _/_/ _/_/ using Acorn Risc PCs - and StrongARMed _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ UK designed and made - British software _/_/ _/__/ _/ _/ _/ _/ supporting our own; even if it is the best ;-) From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Wed May 7 13:46:50 1997 Received: from relay-10.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA38506 for david ; Wed, 07 May 97 13:46:48 GMT Received: from punt-2.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 862991367:10:02644:58; Wed, 07 May 97 08:49:27 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by punt-2.mail.demon.net id bx1025829; 7 May 97 8:49 BST From:("James White (Acorns in Spain)") Sender: root@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Tue, 06 May 1997 09:55:42 +0100 Organization: Subject: Re: printer prob To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19970506.095542.83@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Tue, 29 Apr 1997 00:16:59 +0200 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.56 On Fri 25 Apr, Mr P Mitchell wrote: >The printer configuration is set to A4(Generic) and the paper sizes to A4 >dimensions with Graphics margins of 8.5 mm at the top and 7.6 mm at the >bottom. >The text margins are set to 2 lines at the top and 0 lines at the bottom >with a height of 70 lines. Where have I gone wrong? > Since writing to the Opus List on this subject I have made further tests, and these are my observations. I use an Epson Stylus Colour. In the PD I have set a top graphics margin of 1mm. This allows the printer to start printing 8.5mm from the top edge of the paper. You can't set 0, as you will get an error message. Setting the top graphics margin with any figure greater than 1 simply shunts the start of printing down by that amount. Thus overiding the manual's 3mm specification increases the printable area, but that 8.5mm is nevertheless the closest I can get. This may be a function of the paper gripping mechanism. The Stylus' bottom margin is stated in the manual to be 14mm, but the printer will actually print down to 13mm. It can be observed that any data in the on-screen grey printer margin will not be sent to the printer. By setting the Graphics bottom margin in the PD to 13mm, the maximum on-screen area of white is drawn, so that a line of text sitting 14mm from the edge will still have the decenders printed. Now I can print the credit line in a Sibelius score, or a version of its manual in OPro, without losing parts which appear on s The text margins are set to 0 for the top and 1 for the bottom. A text line (1/6in.) is 4.2mm. I haven't experimented with these as I believe printing is mainly graphic. But by reducing the number of top and bottom lines, in order to increase the height in lines, the printer may well be enabled to use the maximum printing area. I also wonder if a setting of zero is faulty practice. Something for a further test, when I have time. There was a book about this by some British civil servant... Hence letters from the Bank are all left aligned, and don't have unnecessary full stops, commas etc. Anyhow shouldn't your word processor apply the indent for the paragraph as a part of the style, i.e pressing the paragraph causes the desired amount of vertical space, and maybe the first line is indented or outdented compared to later lines. Continuation lines therefore can, but don't have to have a different indentation attribute from the first line. Changing the style is quick and ripples through the whole doc, which is the point. Typing a Tab violates the 'let the computer work for you' rule. Unless you are maybe used to a Typewriter [ho ho!]. I hesitate to get involved in this one, but as an English teacher I guess I must.... My hesitation is partly because I don't suppose the teacher will be too pleased to have a parent who thinks he knows better and compounds this by producing a series of email messages (of all things!) to prove his point. In addition, your son may not thank you for stepping into his classroom in this way! Having said all this, I rarely use first line paragraph indents myself, even when handwriting a letter - where I often use a hanging indent instead. However, this is a matter of sylistic preference and not a hard and fast rule and it's easy to find examples of both styles in recent publications. For the College newsletter I produce (with OPro, of course) I use no indent for the first paragraph but a small indent (12 point or so) for subsequent paragraphs - partly because I leave no additional space after the paragraph. Many newspspers use this style (I know, I've imitated 'The Guardian' in several respects!). Perhaps the best line is to say that consistency and clarity are more important than arguments over correctness. I see nothing wrong with having your paragraphs starting flush left, but suggest you explain to your son that his teacher is a little old fashiioned (after all, he is still called a 'master'!) and it's best to humour him a little. Say you respect his stylistic integity and generally be nice to him - not many people are and I expect, like me, he weeps secret tears at the misuse of apostrophes, espcially in "it's". I'm not an English expert but there are several, acceptable different styles for letter layout. The use of a word procesor is primarily for speed and the style which has no indent, called fully blocked, is just that. Fast to do because it does not have a tab at the start of the paragraph. Also if one reformats so that two paragraphs are joined then the tab has to be removed (or whatever creates the indent). If one uses fully blocked then the paragraphs are separated by two carrige returns, two presses of the return key. Newspapers use the indented form to get more text on the page and handwritten letters are usually written with an indent. Conventionally the fully blocked is more usual for word processed letters. I have the discussion with the English teachers in my school as well. Pains these teachers! They do like to make it difficult for students! :-) -- Peter Blenkinsop Powered by an Acorn Risc PC, driven by ... However, I don't have a CC Turbo driver so will the new colour supplement help? With Acorn drivers the colours printed from Ovation are definitely different to those printed from Impression (on further investigation this is sometimes better and sometimes worse). It would still be useful to be able to print the Ovation colour charts as then at least I would then know what colour I was going to get on the printer for a named colour on screen. First line indent can be set, space after (or before) so no need for a tab at the start of a paragraph or for two returns at the end of the paragraph. My feeling is that generally one or other paragraph marker is used, either the indented first line with no extra space or the extra space with no indent. A refinement or variation on the first line indent is not to indent the first line of a chapter or section. It is all a question of house style, and from the comments it seems that different departments within the same school may have different house styles. Not restricted to schools, the NHS research organisation I work in has heads of departments with strong views which result in differences in the styles I have to use. I was under the > impression that it was no longer the accepted practice to indent a new > paragraph. > > Who is correct? Any English experts out there who can assist? Peter Blenkinsop responded: I'm not an English expert but there are several, acceptable different styles for letter layout. :-) From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Thu May 8 13:48:38 1997 Received: from relay-6.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA38600 for david ; Thu, 08 May 97 13:48:36 GMT Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 863091042:06:02619:53; Thu, 08 May 97 12:30:42 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id bh0600464; 8 May 97 12:30 BST From:(David Pilling) Sender: root@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Thu, 08 May 1997 09:06:30 +0100 Organization: Subject: Answers To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19970508.090630.86@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Wed, 07 May 97 18:25:54 GMT X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.56 Status: R X-Mailer: ArcBM 1.11 rayd@argonet.co.uk (Ray Dawson) >If I turn off Smart quotes in the applets menu, it turns them off for typed >text, but text files dragged into the window still have smart quotes. >Is it possible to turn them on and off completely? Stuff like LISTFONT_00 is translatable text not macros. These tokens should be defined in your applets Aresources.Messages file. Nothing fancy. It is generally plain text with a few frames (both picture and text) scattered about. A draft print showed that the margins for the master pages were incorrect and the master/default frame had to be narrowed. On the master page guidelines, I made the frames 5mm smaller, closed the master page and found that all the text had disappeared. Possible, but I'm not willing to try it. First you've got to decipher the Style file structure, and then translate it into an equivilent OP structure. Also there maybe things in Impression which have no real equivilent in OP (though I can't think of an example...). It would be easier if the files were in a format similar to a Document Definition Language (I think Impression can do this). Its just easier to parse such a file. However, since you don't have Style you can't convert the files. Someone with a lot of programming skill and plenty of time (not to mention a real need) may implement a converter - Sorry but I fail on all three of the above. There isn't an applet to convert Style documents directly, but if you can get them saved out as DDF files from Style, then you can import them into Ovation Pro using the TransDDF filter. This will give you all the style information. Don't forget to filetype them to DDF first. If you don't have Style, then the only way is to drop the Style document into Zap or whatever and drag out the text. You will have to strip out any control characters, but it does work. I've had to do a similar thing with Word 6 files. I wish I was any good at writing applets - then I could write a whole series of document converters. Anyone? I find that the former auto repeats but the later doesn't. Similarly, Ctrl' auto repeats for increased tracking but Ctrl; doesn't for reduced tracking. Both Ctrl[ and Ctrl] auto repeat but neither Ctrl< nor Ctrl> do. Any reason, or way to make them all repeat alike? If a smaller document zoom is chosen, the window is appropriatly reduced in size but when zooming up, the display increases in size, but the window does not. Is there a way to make the window get bigger when zooming up -- other than a second click on the resize button? At the very least, the 'Previous' option might restore both zoom ratio and window size? 'Fit window' and 'Fit screen' both are calculated on vertical size to display a full page. Could there be an option to fit the document to the current window or screen >width< -- even though not all of the page might be visible at once? Is there a way to alter the colour or width of the frame linking arrows? I realise that the links on the Main frame are shown with a slightly narrower arrow, but would prefer a greater distinction. Anyone? Yes please... We need document converters that convert documents directly into Ovation Pro, the things like Word 7, lotus AmiPro, WordPro, WordPerfect etc, etc.. That would be the a good use for applets in OvationPro. But please, if some good kind person could this, let's have them as a standard and not start paying additional fees for features that should have been their in the first place. Cheers.. So if I have a particular style called say "Highlight", how do I determine whether it is already present or not? The style handles do not appear to be consistent between userstyle and currentstyle. What I really need (I think) is a function such as - iscurrentstylename(string &name) - that returns non-zero if the style identified by &name is current at the caret or throughout the selection. I don't know that it really requires 'a lot' of programming skill, if you can get a hold of the format of the respective files. I don't know what Beebug's view on handing out file-format-specs are (maybe someone'd care to comment here?) but last time I asked CC about the Impression fileformat they weren't in the least interested in releasing it. I was given the impression that it wasn't personal, they just don't give it out :) It has been since (and this was a few years back when I asked) suggested on the newsgroups that an exact description doesn't exist, and never really did, though I'm sceptical of that view. If anyone can get a hold of both pieces of information, I'm sure there's several people that'd write a converter. I'm just one of them. -- I won't use words again May god stand between you they don't mean what I meant and harm in all the empty they don't say what I said places where you must walk From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Wed May 28 15:45:09 1997 Received: from relay-6.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA39764 for david ; Wed, 28 May 97 15:45:07 GMT Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 864806257:06:21611:78; Wed, 28 May 97 08:57:37 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id bi0613619; 28 May 97 8:57 BST From:(Ian MacDougall) Sender: root@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Tue, 27 May 1997 16:37:36 +0100 Organization: Beebug Ltd Subject: Re: Converting Impression Style documents to OvationPro To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19970527.163736.02@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Tue, 27 May 1997 16:10:06 +0100 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.56 In message <19970527.152415.26@risc.demon.co.uk> you wrote: > imac@risc.demon.co.uk (Ian MacDougall) wrote: > > >> I still have Impression Style and quite a lot of files to convert. Thank you Mr Martin. The problem stems from the way styles are handled in Impression and Ovation Pro. In the example files a local style sets the font size, Ovation Pro place local styles on top of all other styles, thus the larger local font size overwrites the smaller global font size. Removing local effects should make things better to some degree. -- Ian MacDougall Beebug Ltd From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Wed May 28 15:45:12 1997 Received: from relay-6.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA39765 for david ; Wed, 28 May 97 15:45:11 GMT Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 864806340:05:03541:58; Wed, 28 May 97 08:59:00 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id ap0613619; 28 May 97 8:58 BST From:(Ian MacDougall) Sender: root@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Tue, 27 May 1997 16:37:53 +0100 Organization: Beebug Ltd Subject: Re: Master pages To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19970527.163753.77@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Tue, 27 May 1997 16:17:10 +0100 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.56 In message <19970527.152604.50@risc.demon.co.uk> you wrote: > Is it possible to have quite different master pages between different > chapters? Can this be done? I'm not exactly sure of the question so forgive me if I am telling you stuff you already know: You create a document with a single column master page, you insert a new chapter after the current and select its master page. Choose page guidelines and set columns to 2 and you have a single column chapter followed by a two column chapter. If the first chapter has two columns also, but the second one has a column guide for example the procedure is the same, except you choose a column guide for the second chapter. What you can't have is multiple master pages for the same chapter. -- Ian MacDougall Beebug Ltd From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Wed May 28 15:45:15 1997 Received: from relay-6.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA39766 for david ; Wed, 28 May 97 15:45:14 GMT Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 864806410:05:03961:54; Wed, 28 May 97 09:00:10 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id bl0613619; 28 May 97 8:59 BST From:(Tony Stauber) Sender: root@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Tue, 27 May 1997 15:26:23 +0100 Organization: Subject: Re: upgrades & styles To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19970527.152623.35@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Fri, 23 May 1997 10:43:12 +0300 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.56 My version of Ovation Pro has just crashed again. I've just spent an hour trying to get it to crash so that I can tell you what error message I get, but of course, it's as stable as a rock today.. I can't seem to find any reason why it locks up but I have to press alt & break to terminate, and then restart. It seems to happen when I change styles, or when I copy frames or text to another document (I rarely have more than two open at once.).. but there really doesn't seem to be any pattern. And the same document reloaded usually gives no trouble. I'm an experienced user, and this is a very early copy of Ovation Pro I believe, so perhaps that's what's wrong, but *how do I get an upgrade?* While I have your attention.. says who?.. I have configured about 8 different styles using ctrl shif f1,f2,etc., and configured ctrl shift f1 for the default, body text, but whereas ctrl shift f2,f3 etc. all work as expected and change the text to the new style, ctrl shift f1 does not have the desired effect even if the text is marked, and I have to fiddle manually to get the change. In particular the addstyle() function appears to flip the style i.e. if it is already present it turns it off. Any thoughts anyone has on how to achieve this would be appreciated. .....Jon -- From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Wed May 28 15:45:03 1997 Received: from relay-6.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA39762 for david ; Wed, 28 May 97 15:45:02 GMT Received: from punt-1.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 864806137:05:02458:52; Wed, 28 May 97 08:55:37 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by punt-1.mail.demon.net id ak0613619; 28 May 97 8:55 BST From:(Ian MacDougall) Sender: root@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Tue, 27 May 1997 16:38:10 +0100 Organization: Beebug Ltd Subject: Re: upgrades & styles To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19970527.163810.99@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Tue, 27 May 1997 16:22:14 +0100 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.56 Status: R In message <19970527.152623.35@risc.demon.co.uk> you wrote: > I'm an experienced user, and this is a very early copy of Ovation Pro I > believe, so perhaps that's what's wrong, but *how do I get an upgrade?* You'll get one when the new version becomes available. > While I have your attention.. says who?.. It crashes almost every time I use it, and this is not doing anything ambitious, just A4 texts with 3 or fonts in use and 1 or 2 frames. If I haven't mentioned this before it's 'cos I thought it would go away.. But it hasn't! I'd also like to know how I can get an upgrade of Twain, which I read somewhere has been considerably enhanced.
