I have a huge RTF doc containing the text of all of the Mycenaean tablets from Pylos, in Roman script transcription. It's come from MS Word on a PC. When I import it, it comes out as gibberish (some would say it already was gibberish, I suppose). This annoyed me until I worked out what was going on : for no readily apparent reason, the font used in the RTF doc had been changed into Times.Phonetic, which contains symbols for writing in the international phonetic alphabet. When I changed the font back to Trinity, it had all been imported fine. Odd. Times.Phonetic isn't the name of the font in the RTF, 'cos as I say it came from a PC. And Times.Phonetic isn't the font I get if I just select Times from the font menu -- that gives me Times.ClassGreek. Oh well. At least it does load the file -- the Impression RTF loader just crashed on it. -- __ Rupert Thompson Queens' College, Cambridge, CB3 9ET, UK /\ \ Tel.: 01223-331943 / 0402-130221 / /\ \ \ \/ / Queens' Ball: http://www.bowlhead.demon.co.uk/mayball \/ / / /\ mailto:rjet1@cam.ac.uk |_/\_\ http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/4423 From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Thu Apr 3 13:47:42 1997 Received: from relay-6.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA36560 for david ; Thu, 03 Apr 97 13:47:41 GMT Received: from relay-6.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 860055857:06:15734:45; Thu, 03 Apr 97 09:24:17 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by relay-6.mail.demon.net id bj0612364; 3 Apr 97 9:24 BST From:(Adrian John Warrick) Sender: root@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Wed, 02 Apr 1997 14:16:00 +0100 Organization: Subject: Re: Text formatting To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19970402.141600.41@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Thu, 27 Mar 97 22:03:38 X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.56 Status: R On Thu 27 Mar 97 (13:22:44 +0000), carl.cepurneek@cc.flinders.edu.au, carl.cepurneek@cc.flinders.edu.au wrote: > >Chris wrote ----------------------------- > ... > >Impression) earlier that session. Perhaps what is needed is something like Pager Maker's flexibility in distributing the leading on a line - so that it is either 'proportional' (roughly what we get now), or all above or all below. The latter options allow you to align lines of text precisely against a horizontal boundary. Is there anyway of introducing this as part of the paragraph style? Or is it a limitation of how the Acorn font manager works? For proofing purposes it is nice to be able to use the pamphlet facility -- even as far as make up and stitch for client approval. My filmset bureau handles 460mm wide film --- which is rather nice as my printer has an A2 double sided printing machine -- coincidentally two plates for a full 32-page newsletter. UNFORTUNATELY I cannot seem to automatically impose the 100mm wide 'pages' correctly (some inverted, or not, depending on the immediate print job -- my film-setter likes to make strips of four across the film in order to save film if he makes an error). I cannot seem to get this sort of automatic imposition without crop marks for every 'page' (and the additional gaps this causes!) rather than one set for the entire film 'sheet'. Is this impossible -- or do I have to continue to cut and paste by hand onto a 'virtual sheet' to get the imposition which the printer wants in order to print, fold, crop and stitch all on the one machine? I don't seem to be able to find information on this in the manual - nor by trial and (lots of) error. Any revelations would be very gratefully received! A sub-heading style with bold ticked and a different font specified produces the regular version of the font if bold has previously been applied as an effect. I am also having problems removing styles and effects and applying styles in some instances. Just had to save a text story from a frame in a newsletter, delete the frame, create a new frame and reload the text in order to clear effects previously applied and apply a style to the text - OP refused to do either to the text in the original frame. Clicking on a selected style usually will cancel it but sometimes there is only a response by going to the 'Remove' sub menu. OP also locks up completely occasionally when selecting a style from the style menu. I find this useful to import files from my Psion 3a (= Pocket Book II), where the small screen makes the use of subheadings and the outline facility important - and I want to retain the structure I've already set up. The latest version of !RTFtrans seems to have cured the missing-first word-in-paragraph problem, so just in case it helps, here's the routine I use (can anyone suggest a simpler routine, as there still seems to be at least one step too many here): 1 My OPro choices are set (from the icon bar) for text, NOT to rename styles - ie, this option is not ticked. 2 I set up a style sheet which contains style names that exactly match the names my Psion Word file (I normally use a template on the Psion so that most documents have the same styles) - eg, Word calls it "Body Text", with a space, unlike OPro's "BodyText" - my style in OPro can then use the font, etc, I prefer. 3 Using the A-link, I copy the desired file(s) as RTF onto my hard drive. Unfortunately, Risc OS still sees these as DOS files. 4 Set the file(s) to type RTF. 5 Drag the RTF file onto the OPro icon on the icon bar. A document opens with styles set by Psion Word - body text as Courier, etc - just as it might print out using the printer lead, actually. 6 Open a new blank document with the pre-defined Psion import stylesheet (see step 2). 6 Select all the text in the original OPro RTF document (step 5) and drag this text straight into the empty document set up in step 6. As if by magic, all the styles suddenly appear as I want them. I can then discard the document created in step 5 and continue to edit the document in Ovation Pro. This sounds long-winded, but is actually quite quick. However, I feel that there are perhaps 2 steps too many - why doesn't the document opened by the RTF file adopt the styles already created there by the stylesheet, since the styles are indeed there? I have found another route, though I'm not sure that it's any quicker: After Step 5 above, open the "Edit Styles" window in the document with the imported RTF text; drag the prepared stylesheet onto this window; click on "overwrite" to force the document to accept the imported styles; on closing the window, the document is updated with the desired styles. Again, this works fine but is rather cumbersome. Any neater alternatives? David has written a wonderful piece of software, with an incredibly clever built-in script language. He also (periodically) provides us with new applets. But the "Applets submitted by users" section of the website remains depressingly empty. Now, I've seen a few names on this mailing list who I associate with programming. And we're always clamouring for this-or-that new feature to be added asap. How about we get going with some new extensions? Before everybody leaps on me and tells me to show some support myself, I would just like to point out that I've got my Finals exams coming up, and that I've never learned C :-( However, I have been working on two additions that I think would be useful - if anybody can help get around the problems I'd be most grateful! 1) !Italic - keeps a dictionary of words and phrases which should be made italic. I'm a historian, so my work tends to be littered with foreign words and phrases which I highlight. The extension would be handy for legal terms too - things like Lebensraum, ad litem, etc.. I've got as far as adapting the !Abbrev applet, but since that replaces words after Space is pressed, it won't accomodate phrases too. It also changes things where you have parts of words in the dictionary file (if that makes sense!). Any takers? 2) !Documnt - provides a short-cut to reload previous documents (as Word does for Windows). This sits above Quit on the icon bar menu. I know I need to set up an event handler to write pathnames to a file when a document is opened, but I can't make it do this! Then it would just need to put a limited number of these on the menu. Can anybody help me out/take over? C'mon everyone, let's get to work on this. After all, the more time David has for improving OvPro itself without worrying about applets, the happier we'll all be! I use a style which switches on underline, bold and italic for names of legal cases, and also use italic effect for odd terms. However, once the italic effect is switched off it seems to stay off when you apply the style, although using the effect again works (I think). I thought that I'd got round this temporarily by creating a style which just applied the italic effect and mapping this to CS_I but I now find this creates more subtle problems. She is not computer literate so I guessed she might have accidentally turned it off with a keypress, or moved it offscreen or something. I tried shrinking the doc, and in a higher res mode, but I wasn't sure how to get it via the menus back (at that point) so didn't attempt that. Selecting the whole document and copying it into a new, blank document worked, although this won't transfer any text frames or pictures automatically. Sorry I missed the previous chat about this one.... but in case it's usefulll.. I changed from Impression Style to Publisher, but when I double clicked a Style document it would Load Style instead of Publisher, even though Publisher had priority in my system. In my Desktop boot file (!Boot.Choices.Boot.Tasks.!Boot) I wrote... Set ImpressionStyle$Path ADFS::HD4.$.!Publisher this meant that whenever I double click a Style file it's pointed at Publisher and not Style. Maybe a similar.. Set Ovation$Path ADFS::Hardrive.$.!OvationPro will help with your problem. Maybe, as I don't remember the original question, I'm talking through my bum. Printing via !Printers 1.54, text that appeared on the screen as enhanced justified printed out (on a Deskjet 320) as left justified, but only sections of it did this - and I checked the justification setting many times! This was very occasional and didn't necessarily happen if the text was slightly altered, leading to a reflow. I will look out a page that did this. Also, I sometimes find that gaps appear at the right-hand edge of occasional lines of enhanced justified text, and words can even be split up contrary to hypenation rules and without being hyphenated. Not sure, but the number of times this happens when there's an Alt-153 character on the line is suspicious. Again, will try to find an example. Sorry about the vagueness, I've just returned to university, and reading this mailing list has reminded me of these problems I had but didn't report. The two copyists have always used Quark E. in the past, and it must be a testament to the standard of OPro that they are perfectly happy with its' results, as they are thoroughly professional people. To site an instance, Paco Moya has just sent in some test papers to the Centre of Music Documentation (Spain), to which he is applying for the job of cataloging the entire Choral works of the XVIIIth Century of C=F3rdoba Cathedral. He has received a note from the Directora saying 'The quality of your work surpasses all of our previous Musical Editions'. She is incredibly impressed. Paco has two requests, both stemming from Quark. 1. He would like two arrows onscreen, up and down, to perform Leading. Rather than go down the menus time and again.=20 2. He would like a 'hand' to move the page, as in Sibelius and Impression and Quark. I have v. 2.36. He has a later version of OPro than mine, which perhaps accounts for some enhanced performance. Also his is on a StrongArm machine.=20 But I have to say I wasted a whole morning doing a Contents page with Tab Leaders and Leading. The chapter Headings were in Bold and needed extra Leading for emphasis. I learnt to save each line of text, then highlight the line, go down the menus, do a (say) Absolute, crash, reload, hilite, Incremental, crash, reload, hilite, etc. etc. About 30 bomb-outs that morning. I would welcome any tips or technique corrections. I tried hiliting from-end-of-previous-line, start-of-line, etc. etc. Occasionally, one would stick, and be instantly saved. So I progressed. Paco had done the first part, but with Double. Double works OK. I never heard a peep from him. either he gave up, or never had the problem. This is the sort of news which really make me grin from ear to ear. :) If you get it right, it'll be a huge argument for buying Ovation Pro for anyone doing RISC OS-based serious desktop design who hasn't done so already. I assume that Tony Tolver has gone bananas about the prospect of *finally* having full imposition using a RISC OS program. 8) Contents/index-generation - that's a doddle not worth mentioning compared to the complexities of imposition, isn't it? PDF: Do you have any plans to incorporate full import/export-facilities for this format in O.P.? It's becoming a defacto standard for document exchange in the prepress world, and I'm very much afraid it may become a near-absolute necessity to support. I think Majid may have some plans for supporting Acrobat PDF in his Phoenix-system - why not talk to him on the subject? I've received a very good (though non-technical) book called "PDF Printing and Publishing" (ISBN 0-941845-22-2) released by AGFA/Micro Publishing Press. I strongly recommend you to read it, since it offers a complete rundown over all the functions and advantages of using PDF 3.0 in the prepress workflow. The need for supporting it will become urgent, as soon as OmniClien2 is released with AppleTalk support. If you sell it as an extension applet, I for one would buy it for L100 or more... :) -- Best regards, Sveinung W. The same page, however, would be printed perfectly if the picture was "hidden". I have made some further investigations since last Friday. I have set up the same text and picture in Impression Script. The outcome has been identical. Since it seems unlikely that Ovation Pro and Script would suffer the same "bug" it seemed to me that the problem must lie with the printer and/or the printer driver. (I am using an unmodified LaserJet 5L and Printers 1.54.) I wondered whether the problem arose from a shortage of memory somewhere. The picture that I have been using was a photograph of a church (a WWW page download) in the form of a 94K JPEG file. I appreciate that the picture contains much more "information" than the printer could render, however, it was conveniently available, and served to illustrate the associated text. I have experimented by cropping the original picture to produce smaller (JPEG) portions of the original. I have found (by a process of trial and error) that the problem of "fuzzy" text arises with picture files somewhere between 23K (OK) and 28K (not OK). Two 23K pictures on the same page is also not OK. It looks as though I can avoid further problems by taking care not to have picture files in excess of about 23K per page. However, I would appreciate receiving information about what is happening and what is at the root of the problem. Incidentally, why does the Ovation Pro Document Information dialogue box always show the file as being about 7K larger than does the Acorn Filer? -- ___________________________________________________________________________ Derrick G Porter dgporter@argonet.co.uk Tel: +44 1798 81 2383 ..... in deepest Sussex ..... ___________________________________________________________________________ From maillist@risc.demon.co.uk Mon Apr 28 22:17:43 1997 Received: from relay-10.mail.demon.net by pilling.demon.co.uk with SMTP id AA37999 for david ; Mon, 28 Apr 97 22:17:41 GMT Received: from relay-9.mail.demon.net by mailstore for david@pilling.demon.co.uk id 862212016:09:21123:77; Mon, 28 Apr 97 08:20:16 BST Received: from risc.demon.co.uk ([158.152.18.44]) by relay-11.mail.demon.net id ae1117245; 28 Apr 97 8:18 BST From:(Rupert Thompson) Sender: root@risc.demon.co.uk Date: Fri, 25 Apr 1997 08:55:34 +0100 Organization: Subject: Index & contents (was Imposition) To: Subscribers to the mailing-list OVATIONP-L Reply-To: ovationp-l@risc.demon.co.uk Message-ID: <19970425.085534.54@risc.demon.co.uk> Precedence: bulk X-Posting-Date: Thu, 24 Apr 1997 10:10:12 +0100 (BST) X-MailList: MailList v0.16 the mailing-list robot for RiscOS X-Apparently-From: X-Posting-Agent: RISC OS Newsbase 0.56 Status: R On Wed 23 Apr, Sveinung W. Now there's a PDF viewer for RISC OS, a means of generating it is essential - if only because it gives traditional DTP programs a way of competing with HTML. The best solution would be a printer driver which produced it. I would assume this would be a simple hack and slash job on the existing PS one. I've asked Acorn about doing this. The other option is to convert PS to PDF. Thanks to Graham Allen for pointing out that GhostScript 4.X can do this - all we need is to do a port. He's also raised the point that the new 'RiscScript Pro' may be able to do this conversion. Sounds as though you need more memory in your printer. Without the picture, the printer can render the page within its existing memory. When the picture is added the printer needs more memory in order to render it. When there is insufficient memory the printer will automatically reduce the print resolution in order to fit everything in. ___________________________________________________________________________ > > > > > > > > -- ------------------------------------------------------------------- Peter Bell - peter@foursqre.demon.co.uk - FourSquare Computing Ltd 5 Drome Path, Winnersh, Wokingham, Berkshire RG41 5HB, UK. I am using Acorn Printer Manager 1.53 with appropriate BJC-4000 driver. When I printed out some of the sample files I noticed that the bottom half of the last line had failed to print. (It now appears that it does this in Impression also but I have the frame smaller so I didn't notice!) I tried adjusting the margins on the printer driver but this does not seem to make any difference. I cannot print below 17 mm from the bottom of the page. The printer configuration is set to A4(Generic) and the paper sizes to A4 dimensions with Graphics margins of 8.5 mm at the top and 7.6 mm at the bottom. The text margins are set to 2 lines at the top and 0 lines at the bottom with a height of 70 lines. This would seem to allow the printer to print as low as possible on the page. The manual says it should print down to 7 mm from the bottom. Where have I gone wrong? If you're set up to use 600dpi printing with resolution enhancement, and you send too complex (read: big) a page to a standard 5L (which has only 1 meg memory on board), it can't cope with it, so automatically reduces the resolution to 300dpi, which, with resolution enhancement, gives you much fuzzier text. A partial solution may be to use the freeware LaserJet driver module by Andreas Dehmel (in the PCLTools archive on HENSA, package f009). That uses compression which may help, and it's faster anyway. The only real solution though, is to buy more memory for the 5L. It'll cost you around GBP55 +VAT for a 4 Meg upgrade, but I'd say it's probably worth it. Try to get a look at a MISCO catalogue or something like. > Incidentally, why does the Ovation Pro Document Information dialogue box > always show the file as being about 7K larger than does the Acorn Filer? From OvP made a new document, but used the system to truncate the file name for me e.g typed in to_charlie_smith Document remembered the long name. However I later clicked on to_charlie from Filer and got 2nd Document entry in the applet menu for the shortened name (A5000 machine) Rescued it by hacking the applet's Data file. I think Document is really good idea, but this will be confusing for the family with this bugette present. Also, I had a situation where OvP wasn't remembering my preferences. It was because in !OvnPro.AutoRun.!Choices I had made a defensive copy of the relevant file; because Ovation uses the commendably flexible approach of running any file in this place(?) my saved copy run too, alphabetically after the amended one. So no choices altered! Chucked out my 'defensive' copy. I found that by not loading interactive help, for purposes of porting material from Impression to Ovation via DDF, even my 4Meg A5000 had enough memory to run Impression & Ovation together for a short time. Err, my fault, I wrote it. I didn't spot this because I have long file names running. No matter, the !SFraction directory can safely be renamed to something line !SFractn. The notes issued with the applet state that it "adds documents to the icon bar menu which lists the ten most recently edited documents". I have noticed that when a document is saved for the first time (i.e. named and the file-icon dragged to a particular directory window) the document name does indeed appear on the document list as stated. However, a file that is not included in the document list which is loaded by double-clicking on its file-icon in a directory window, after editing and saving back to its original location, does not appear in the document list. Can anything be done to this applet so that the document list contains the names of all edited and saved files, and not just those that have been saved for the first time. I assisted my son to prepare a document for school and tidied up the paragraphs by removing the tab in the first line so that all the paragraphs had the shape of this one. The English Master has amended all the paragraphs so that there is an indent in the first line, as in this one. I was under the impression that it was no longer the accepted practice to indent a new paragraph. Who is correct? The kerning/tracking option on the modify text dialogue box always seems to say Track even when no text is selected and I can't kern between two letters. The manual says that if no text is selected then it should say Kern instead. Is this a fault or have I misunderstood something? 2. I realise that getting colours on screen to match those on the printer is an extremely complex problem! However, the colour matching I get in OvationPro with my Canon BJC-610 is worse than I had with Impression. Is there any way of controlling the way colours are translated for printing? Or is there any other way of being able to ensure that the printed colour is the one you want? Is this going to be easier with the OvationPro Colour Supplement? I know professional printers use Pantone print samples, perhaps the answer would be to allow each user to print the Ovation Colour charts on their own printer - is there an easy way of doing this?
